Spoke to a dietician about BMI the other day. Apprently the measurements as to what is normal was taken more than a 100 years ago. She says the BMI is completely irrelevant by today's standards and should be ignored. I'm quite happy to ignore it haha - according to it I am very obese!

BMI becomes even more inaccurate as you move further from average height. It is an indicator for mass population groups and pretty pointless on an individual basis, unless you are of average height

Lets not kid ourselves. We all know BMI is not the most accurate measure, as it does not account for high bone and muscle mass. But most of us are not on this thread because we fall into the.. "I'm not fat, I'm just big-boned" category.

As with all population-based formula, they are based around a normal distribution curve, ans will be skewed for taller/shorter individuals.

BUT, for what it is (easy, cheap, reproducable) it is accurate enough to idenify INDIViDUALS at increased risk of nin-communicable diseases. We can try and rationalise it as much as you want, we are still at increased risk - even if we feel like rationalising the extent of our fatness by blaming BMI.

If on top of that your waist circumference (not waist:hip ratio) is above normal, then there is no further argument.

What's your BMI? Just out of interest...

i would say  BMI is more for people like froome who want to loose that 0.3 kg to get faster up the climb...i can see i am fat...no need to measure the bmi "yet"...i have at least another 10 kg to go before i start measuring BMI.

down from 135 kg to 98...and up a little to 99 over Christmas...i take you havent been following the fatties threads.

almost forgot to mention down from a size 44 - 36 ;)

Not too shabby!

If only you dropped your box of cinnabon addiction, then you'd find the last few kgs a bit easier to get rid of.

Well done on the loss.

At last I seem to be back in control of my weight - I have already met the end of January target.

The wheels fell off last year when I resigned my Congo job at the beginning of August, and took my wife to meet our cousins (gorillas and chimps) in Rwanda and Uganda before beginning work I SA in September.

In SA there are so many food temptations on every corner which I did not have in our camp at Twangiza.

Better discipline and High intensity structured indoor training programmes (GCN Videos) are doing the trick.

Cloud eggs this morning

No wonder it's considered healthy (recipe from MFP) I burned a 1000c just to separate and beat the eggs.

First and last time. I'll stick with good old scrambled

I tried them last night, but the egg whites stays a bit soggy, so I must be doing something wrong.

Havent been extremely strict on the diet but I have been staying under 1800 calories per day.

Another 3 to go and will then have to start dialing it in

Well done, dude.

Dinner last night was a 3 egg omelette with fried onions, chilli salt, black pepper and spring onions. YUMMY.

Lots of water being consumed, and plenty trips to the bivvy for the fluids that are coming out.

Down to one coffee per day (50ml milk) and then lunch will shortly (as of tomorrow) be changing to roast chicken. Cheapest protein there is, and tasty as well.

Good progress so far this year. Entering for the half 36One was one of the best decisions I have made. I am not trying to lost weight for the race, but it gives me a good time within which to reach some goals, and scares me enough to stay away from eating badly, and more importantly keeps me on the bike and training.

Currently clocking around 200km per week (10hours over 5 days), 150 of which is on the mtb, and 50 on the trainer. I am tired - haven't cycled this much in a long time, but I can feel my fitness picking up even though muscles are fatigued. Eating right is also helping alot, I am 4kg down so far - but still have about 18kg to go. Luckily I have been motivated, and strangely for me not struggling too much to stick to the diet - with the exception of 2 or 3 planned cheat meals this year so far.

The only thing I am sceptical about is my back holding out. Area around L5/S1 disc feels tender, and I am being careful for it not to slip again - doing lots of core workouts and stretching, as well as weekly scheduled trip to the physio. The only downside of being so careful about my back and compensating a bit, is that my neck and upper back muscles get very stiff - but that's why the physio is there. I have a feeling if I lose another 18kg my back issues will sort itself out.

Feels good to be on the way to fitness and good shape again - the last 3/4 years of being fat has not been fun at all!
