Has Garmin lost its edge?

If one was unhappy with the 12 months then why would you buy the unit?

Who actually checks how long a gaurentee is valid for when they buy a sports watch etc...?

To the OP: Bad luck bud, there is a reason why gaurentees expire before the product.

One would hope garmin would offer you a different watch seeing these are known to be problematic, maybe it’s worth trying asking them this?

It’s amazing when you think what this things can do and what they get put through that they even last that long

I tend to agree. This is why I support Garmin. To replace a watch at less than 30% of retail price once it's out of warranty - in my books that's pretty awesome of them. They could have just said sorry bad luck and moved on with things.

OP, you got insurance on the watch you could perhaps leverage? Not the point of the initial post I know but.....trying to offer a suggestion.

If it was an event that caused the damage then yes, but then the OP can’t be annoyed at Garmin.

Only having to pay in R2000 to get a brand new unit valued at R6500, even though it’s out of warranty is exactly why I support Garmin.

No doubt

What a pleasure

What after-sales service of note

Unheard of

Having to replace a R6500 watch because it only lasted a year is not so awesome. Replacement value is irrelevant.

I have a Garmin forerunner 35 so more basic but does what I need it to do. I race enduro (motorcycles, not yet racing bicycle) and the watch has lasted me 18 months already and survived a few crashes.... I use it for all my training and racing as I like to be able to monitor heart rate and average speed, etc especially when pushing myself in the extreme situations.... I think it's unfortunate that the watch has stopped working as I reckon like anything sometimes you unlucky.... One watch can last you 5 years and sometime there is the unfortunate event that it stops working right after warranty expires... I would take the R2000 replacement unit. It's unfortunate but think that is a more than generous offer from Garmin

Considering the factors here, what do you think would be an acceptable solution?

Starting with a damage report would be great. Determining the cause of the malfunction will show who is at fault. Easy.

Short Answer: No, Garmin has not lost it's edge.

They were very accommodating in giving you a new unit for R2000.

So you cannot question their conduct in handling your request.

You are obviously very entitled to question the quality of a watch that only lasts 13 months. A watch that shows many instances of the same failure shortly out of warranty would justify public backlash and taking your money elsewhere.

But Bikehub might just as well be known as GarminLand as majority of people here have been well served by their Garmin units and their support staff.

Sorry for your failure, I think you got unlucky.

I think it’s been concluded that Garmin is at fault? They didn’t claim water damage? But the device is out of warranty. If it’s water damage, then OP must claim from insurance.

The fact that they are willing to offer a replacement at such a discounted rate should be applauded not condemned, in my opinion at least.

I have a Garmin which I'm happy with but I will also agree with what the OP states, Garmin will deny there is an issue. My first unit was a 305 which was out of warranty decided one day to completely die. A search on the web including their own forum displayed many similar instances. Taking it into Garmin one morning there were 2 others in the Q with exactly the same issue, speaking to the service desk official I was told they were not aware of any issues, but the way they offered me a very good upgrade to a 705 i knew something was up.
