Cycling lingo, teach me!

Morning all.

So I bought my first proper bike 2 weeks ago, and have been pedaling my fat butt off ever since.

I told the guys at Bike-Addict where I bought my ride that I wanted to buy the bits and bobs from local shops around here to establish a relationship with them rather than just going there for services etc.

So while shopping at the local Bloemfontein shops for some odds and ends, I ended up at Elevate Cycles just around the corner from home. I walk in, and a friendly girl walks up to me and asks what I am shopping for. I tell her gloves and a few other things. She shows me what they have and I pic a pair. I tell her that I also need some chain wax. She starts giggling at me in my face and replies: "It's called lube, not wax" as if I just told the funniest joke ever. I start blushing and apologize for this "huge" mistake and say I used to use wax type stuff when I still rode offroad motorbikes.

Anyways, I grab the bottle of Smoove LUBE, pay for it and the gloves and bugger off without all the other stuff I needed.

At Cycle World, I buy a saddle bag, computer, plugs, pump etc. without the salesman laughing once at my lack of proper lingo.

I'll still pop in to Cyclotech to buy something there. While bike shopping there though, I experienced them very helpful and friendly.

My question is, is there any thread here that explains what is which when talking cycling? Like a dictionary of sorts so I don't end up being giggled at when chatting to the serious okes.

Cheers,

Geno

It's the Freestates.  You call it wax.  She calls it lube.  She giggles.

Whatever makes it smoove I say......

Missed opportunity I think.

Next time go in there and ask her for a pomp and see if she giggles.....then you'll know.....

Just go back tomorrow, and tell her you need a stronger and smoother lube as there is a skreeching noise whenever you ride your granny up a hill.

Depends... do you want a shock pomp, a hand pomp, a floor standing pomp or portable pomp??? :whistling: and then what kinda head you want on your pomp... :whistling: (Presta or Schrader) - A good head is important...

being Freestate you would need to differentiate as to not confuse it with a windpomp... ;)

Dont say "rad run dude" or "sick bike bro" (unless you are 12)

One has to act ones age, "lingo compliance" is over rated and just makes you sound silly.

Seat/saddle (a more pointless debate will be hard to find)

Wax/lube (sure the sales person got the idea).

Welcome to the cycling comunity, hope you get a good price for the clubs.

My most difficult explanation of gearing is riding in a "big gear " or  "small gear "

Big gear meaning you are on the Big chain ring up front and small cog at the wheel  Generally used when going down hill

Small gear meaning you are on the Small chain ring up front and the bib cog at the wheel . Generally used for going uphill .

And so there will be many more as you ride with more guys who sometimes have there own lingo to name or explain .
