Hi everybody. I Want to buy lights for my commuter bike. I Don't want to spend a fortune on some supersonic trillion lumen thing that can light up Mars from here ! Are there any good options for give or take R2k ? All advice and recommendations welcome. Thanks.

Extreme Lights after sale service is pretty good

and IMO its an important consideration as your lights take more pounding than you realise (especially on a mtb) so things tend to break after a time.

I want to throw in a curveball in the mix, look at Ryder for a front light too.

Was really impressed with the cool protective travel case I got with it for easy travelling and protecting your light. Not to mention the lifetime warranty they provide!

I am using their Orion 1000 light and it works wonders! Small, but potent.

If you need more juice, look at this option:

Mine is still going strong and very happy with it.

EDIT: Found a cheaper price on the Orion 1500 and updated the link.

Another extremelights fan. Have been using their 1000 lumen front light for at least 2 years and it is faultless and provides very good light. Highly recommended!

I have been using the first Extremelights (Magicshine) front and back for nearly 5 years now. I have not had a single problem and use my lights for long rides at night. Purchased a spare battery at the same time and use them on a rotational basis.

Can't go wrong with the after sales service either. For your budget you will get a decent light and you don't need the high powered ones which are also available.

buy your front light from CWC. One of the marvel jobbies of 1000 lumens. and spend the money and get a daylight rear light. Cateye goes for round 600 and bontrager flare r is going for 850.

Andrew: How does this lamp fit on the handlebars? Just an o-ring? I like the simplicity and the no battery.

Just an O-ring mount, yes. I am sure (if you would like) get a quick release clamp from Extreme Lights if you prefer that over the O-ring mount.

Do remember the light comes with a battery pack which you mount onto the top tube. But overall a clean setup and easy to set up.

For Road: Use minimum 500 lumens

For MTB: Use minimum 1000 lumens

I would still say a 1000 lumens (because the OP will be commuting). There are certain parts of roads where it is not lidded up well due to lack of street lights. And on foggy mornings, you really need a bright light.

And for good measure and visibility for cars and other vehicles, also consider the Lumos Helmet. I got given one for my birthday, thought it was a bit of a gimmick at first, but now wont ride on the road without it.
