What causes heart attacks among cyclists

Recommended Posts

I ended up in hospital few years back with damaged heart muscles after racing with a very minor cold. I think the virus / illness was more severe than what the (minor cold) symptoms let on because I would not have been deliberately irresponsible. Scary thing was that there were zero warning signs - the discomfort only came after the race was done.

Nowadays I cringe everytime when someone on the hub posts how they raced despite their cold, you don't realise how irresponsible that is until you lie in the heart unit surrounded by old & fat people...

This ☝????☝????☝????

Most athletes and the amateurs too

Don’t recover fully after a bout of flu and other viral goggas

It is called hay fever

More accurately - Allergies....

If one suffers from low grade chronic allergies, then visiting a specialist allegologist (sp?) seem like a good idea - seasonal allergies are often very treatable once one understands the exact sensitivity - I think the most common on in Jhb is an allergy to Plane tree pollen - and we have hundreds of these populating gardens and sidewalks...

Lovely wood to turn, I noticed they have been felling quite a few of them around here and replacing with indigenous species.

210 people die everyday in SA from heart disease.

Given the field doing the CTCT, chances are that someone will suffer a heart attack during the event.

So the question is - does a heart attack at the CTCT have to be fatal? Is there sufficient medical support and coverage to treat and save a heart attack victim? Should someone be dying on the side of the road while he waits for assistance?

My understanding is that 2 doctors that was riding stopped almost immediately at the rider with the heart attack and the race medics were also on the scene very quickly - so in this instance it at least it was not a case of "dying while waiting for assistance"

The race organisers know by now the "hotspots" where heart attacks happen frequently (interestingly one is at the turnoff at the end of the Blue route) and plan accordingly.

Well, just about everything I wanted to say here has been said. Bottom line, if the body is ill then rest!

My GP warned me to not race even after I was feeling better. He recommended that I start exercising only five days after I start feeling well again.

eh, cardiac distress hotspots?  how's that for a new and inspiring progress marker.

There were 5 heart failure incidents yesterday. Four are recovering in hospital this morning.

If you mean AF - Atrial Fibrillation - then the answer is yes

There are 2 fundamental types of "Heart attack" (in laymans explanation)

1 - Blockage of a coronary artery for some reason - and there are multiple (plaque buildup, clot in the artery (sometimes from external to the heart, sometimes internal origin etc) - depending on severity of the blockage, then this leads to death of some of the cardiac muscle, potentially including the electrical nodes that cause regular heart contraction.

2 - Electrical anomalies - so there is an issue with the way the heart creates or propagates the electrical signal that regulates contraction - clearly 1 above can also create this scenario)

So - in your case you seem to have a problem in the second category where for some reason you "lose" heart beat/s - when your defib notices this, then it fires - basically causing a "reboot" of the electrical control of the heart - and in general the heart resumes normal function.

Hi V12man yes AF.

Yes there is some problems with the "wiring" of my heart. i just want to recover from my rotator cuff op and then i will make serious work of the heart problem.......(maybe this needs to be in the over 50 thread... :w00t:  )

You should overlap recovery...... :)

But it's not an over 50's specific problem - unfortunately - with luck it will be an easily identifiable and resolvable problem.

Are you referring to ablation?

Well - that's an option for some problems - not for everything - got to get a proper diagnosis first - guess you might have had some testing done already.

I'm sure I read a doctor on the hub telling us not to run/ride after taking anti inflammatory tablets.

If I remember correctly he was saying numerous people who had a heart attack at the comrades was due to this.

my doc also told never to ride on anti-inflammatory pills , iam sure he said it will kill your kindeys he never mentioned heart and was best to either take it atleast 12hours before you ride or afterwards but never during a race.
