Garmin Edge 520 or 820 for MTB?

It operates easier with the push buttons. 820 can be challenging to operate during a MTB ride.

I actually bought specifically a white cover for my 820.  Not because my fashion sense sucks but should that Garmin get knocked off or dropped in the bush/dirt it might be easier to find.  I once helped a guy on the 94.7 who went bundu bashing with his bike in the bushes along the R55.  We looked all over for his phone (which was black with a black cover).  I phoned his number just to find that we were practically standing on it as it was hidden among dirt and leaves.

You should get a lanyard with the device to loop around your handlebars, I use mine religiously for the very reason you have mentioned

I use the small lanyard that came with it. Never goes on the bike without being looped around the bars first. Has saved my Garmin a couple of times

Is it possible to use the Garmin segments etc effectively or does one need the Stava bit?

Get a 1000 second hand. One in the classifieds for under R7k. Its touch screen is better than that of the 820.

820 here, no issues with full finger gloves.

I have a 520, so far so good and a great lil device. If I needed mapping when I bought it I would f gone 820. If you going to do a lot of touring in places you don’t know the 820 or touring edge are better for the mapping ability. 520 can point you home only.

 

With the 520 go to open source maps and download around 90 meg with of map sectors to override the standard Garmin map which is a lot of poo

I have a 510 (touch screen) and I have just bought a new 520 (wasn't looking really but a bargain presented itself) The touch screen options for MTB is a no no... you can live with it if you really want to but I would rather go back to buttons!
