Thanks for the info. I now will definitely do the S2C NEXT year. Although I am a relaxed rider I still want to enjoy it as training is not really on my agenda.

Reading all the input I will start training in Feb 2019 and enter  (if they still have it

Suggest you start your training before Feb and include climbing in your training program.

Per day joberg2c offers better value

The sensible me I would rather for similar pricing but dbl logistics do Berg&Bush and Sani2c as two events spread over year.

Joberg2C does however have a very special attraction and is on my radar

I usually do 2 stage races a year. 1 ‘local’ and 1 ‘away’. Combined cost was last year around R25k for 7 days riding (includes flights, accommodation and entries). Some mates and I are leaning to rather do a trip to Morzine next June for around the same cost as 2 stage races each (flights, transfers, ski lift passes, grub and beer)

I get why people do the same stuff over and over. Its familiar and in your comfort zone. Life is short, live it with no regrets.

No longer finishing on the beach...finish is now at the school. That's a bummer!!

I am chuffed about that, the logistics of having to hack up to the school to get your car, only to hack back down to the beach to then try and find parking and your partner etc (and in the rain last year) was painful.

The school is a lot better too in that there are several food and drinks stands where you can just chill post race which wasn't really the case at the beach.

Each to their own however.

No more Nando's.

Now you get to try and conquer the diabolical "Iconic climb" in its place.

I see they have added a "chicken run" this year so you dont have to do Iconic

I think it will be much better finishing at the school. Wil see this year

The logistics really sucked at the beach.

Chicken Run on an up-hill??? Probably on the back of people complaining like crazy last year - well, I am talking about the Trail group specifically - not sure about race and adventure.

I was planning on handing out cement pills going up Iconic to those whiners, but not doing S2C this year (rather going for free beer at B&B).

Rule #5...

Agree. the beach finish is something that sounds great in theory but didn't work so great in practice.

(Even for the W2W as well...)

Don't know how it will work in practice but maybe something like the finish line at the beach with a neutral zone to the school will work well?

From the newsletter

"This comes at a cost, in the form of Iconic Climb. It is a test for the best and will be an achievement for those who reach the top without having to put a foot down. For those non climbers and buffalos we have a new route option for 2018. This is an alternative route around and up Hlegabafazi instead. After regrouping with your team mate at the Trig beacon, you wind through the African bush on Out of Africa 2 and pop out on a 3km section of district road. Let the strong guys in your group pull you through to the Highflats Farmers Table where you can refuel for the next section of the stage"

Not sure how I feel about this as I slot squarely into the realm of buffalo and climbing sucks!!  Added to that I do not need to worry about my 34T upfront on a 1x11 (10-42) - my plan was to swap it out on day 2 with a 30T.

That said, Iconic is a challenge, and whilst it sucks I get the sense that I will regret not doing it and it may feel like "cheating" opting for the chicken run.

Wonder what around and up "Hlegabafazi" entails!

I've done school finish and beach finish. School finish is better because of the logistics only... But the swim in the sea is a big plus. The climb up to the school is a real tester at the end.

Iconic climb?.... You guys referring to push of a hill up to the top after nandos?.. Or the climb from the water crossing up to nandos... Either way... You just do it.. And you don't unclip and push on either of them.

From what you are saying I gather that you did not ride last year? They changed the route out of the valley before the Spur(used to be Nando's) stop by using a new climb called 'Iconic'. There are some steep sections and it is quite rutty at various points with only one riding line although it is supposed to be an old jeep trek.

I found it quite tough, rode as far as I could before putting a foot down, waited for my partner and we pushed/rode/pushed to the top.

Nice!

I remember it like it was yesterday.

I also thought it was all done after the first half, which was tough, and thought "not that bad as they were making it out to be" but then it just kept on going...

First half is definitely the hardest.
