Had a nice ride on Sunday afternoon .... bunch of middle aged men enjoying the Meerendal trails ...   :whistling:

Think I may well have been the ou-toppie in this bunch.    When did THIS happen !

One gent's daughter of 11 years old joined us for the ride .... she already has Western Province colours for cycling.

I was stupid enough to try and stay close to her to take GoPro shots ....  :nuke:

I was pushing myself into the red-line, and upped my average speed by 1,5km/h !!  AND we were SLOW on the downhills !!!  Thus my speed on the uphills must have gone up significantly trying to stay with this young lady !!

When she gains confidence for the downhills there is no way any of us would stay with her !!!

Sounds like you also have a ticket on the Pity Wagon.

Why the need for separate anything?

I'm 10-15 years older than most of the guys I ride with and I give most of them a hiding, and I ride a singlespeed.

If the music is too loud, you're too old.

Hi there

I won't take the bait. Have a wonderful day.

there's a oom working with me...turns 80 in May. goes for his 1hr ride every afternoon and on wednesdays, he goes for a long ride of 1.30hr.

Also bumped into an old friend who I met while cycling with his son. He used to be in the bunch while we were racing and was about 55 then and fit enough for 100km .

He was on his bike when I saw him on Saturday and guess what he also turns 80 in two months time and still cycles and still look fit and healthy.

In a nice way - speak for yourself - so not really.

Still like to give the young ones a go.

Do yourself a favour and follow Wimpie van der Merve on Strava - amazement!

I have a 70yr + friend that most young ones would struggle to keep up with and skills they can only dream of.

My biggest issue is getting the breaks fixed up the rest not really a problem.

I thought this one dude (youngster) rides a lot until I stumbled across Wimpie's Strava page.

Jeez louise! I wish to be like him when I am that old.

So, as often happens, some of the more elitist riders make a harsh point/statement that completely ignores the majority. In this case, yes there are older riders who thrash youger ones. I do too, but the majority of older riders are not able to beat the younger riders, are not competing for high positions and they often have questions, simple questions that the elitists scorn. My suggestion was aimed at these folk. By providing a virtual club (not necessarily on Bikehub), these riders can ask questions or offer thoughts which they might otherwise feel would be laughed at on a general forum.

Perhaps just use this thread as the forum you propose? Eventually, like some of the other threads more aligned towards 'minority' groups (you know what I mean), they become only populated by like-minded people.

Looks to me like the OP’s idea for a really constructive and engaging thread have been scuppered by an old fart type pissing contest, which is a pity.

Mostly old farts struggle to piss.... ????????????

We are clever enough to evaluate if the fights worth getting in to :-).

Age does have some advantages, like lower testosterone levels.

Plus old farts are all too too tired and seen it all before so we know its just handbags at dawn and don't really have the ability to get in to a real pissing contest (we can hardly hit the urinal any more as you point out) plus  with too many grumpy old farts here (coz we over 50 and sore and upset that our PB's are behind us) so its like mutual respect.
