Junk miles

I think this refers to cyclists who want to go faster and see #gainz and use power meters and have a structured training program running in conjunction with a structured eating program, don't drink beer, actually train to 'win' etc...

The basic idea that a 1 hour ride with 4 x 10 min max efforts or 20 x 40s intervals is more beneficial than a 170km pedal round the peninsula in terms of #gainz.

If, like me, you have given up bike races and couldn't care less whether you can put out 400 wattys over 20min in an ftp test, junk miles is just a term used by the guys who ride for #gainz for what I call cycling.

True there is never a junk mile but then you may also not complain about the amount of "training" you did and how you cannot understand how you still cannot hang onto your start group and get dropped.

Be serious about the "training" you did and the amount of fun riding you did... But have fun anyway.

I have never trained except for a 8 week period before the 2004 Argus.

I ride my bike anything from Zero to 12 hours a week depending on which of my mates is available and what we want to do on the bike.

"JUNK MILES" are the miles NOT ridden and sitting on your A$$ in front of the TV  :whistling:

Every inch out on the saddle is one extra inch cycled...just ride when possible, do intervals and "gainz" where possible and most important...enjoy every minute my fellow cycling friends.

I’ve been reading up on doing more scientific/structured training. A few coaches refer to a term “junk miles” in their material. Reference is made that “too many athletes do a lot of junk miles and not enough quality miles”.

What do they refer to here? My understanding is that it is not all about the total milage that one does but what it consists of.

What would be examples of worthless training miles?

FDP I hope you can decipher some of the posts in this thread as to who knows what you are talking about & who doesn't when it comes to Scientific & Structured Training training by Coaches. Unfortunately this is the hub & anyone can just post for the sake of posting here. Below is an extract from another coach, giving a bit more detail.

Eliminate everything that does not make you stronger
Remember what I said previously about skipping recovery rides? If you perform training that
doesn’t make you a stronger rider (e.g. junk miles), try to eliminate this from your training and do more of the training that takes you closer to your goal.

“Junk miles steal focus and don’t significantly improve your fitness.”

When you reduce training time, you increase your attention to the workout you perform. Doing
shorter workouts make it easier to complete the training program as you’ve planned it or maybe
spend additional time on the training that helps you reach your goal.

running = junk miles

Couldnt have said it better myself.

Run to toilet

Run to fetch beer

Run away from assailant

Other than that, theres absolutely no need to run, ever.

We used to say "running is no good to man nor beast" (with the above exceptions obvs)

Okes hating on the running... It helps with bone density so when you fall off your bike you don't snap every bone in your shoulder like a dry twig.

It helps your body learn to recover while active. It is not limited to roads or trails, it can be done in any weather with very little recourse from parts or expense.

It takes you places you can't go on a bike. Also, if you are running fit, you can probably ride a bike and not be absolutely rubbish, but I've seen cyclists who can't even call their diarrhea the runs.....

Running is awesome.
