V12man Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 How reliable are chain checkers?pretty good unless they belong to some bike shops...
Breezer Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I one got 20000km on a ultegra cassette. The 7th jumped immediately, so i put back the 6th chain and rode it till it was done. Got about 2000km on extra out of the chain. Unfortunately if you do this be ready to replace chanrings as well.
Underachiever Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 If you replace the chain timeously then your cassette should last for about 4 - 5 chains. If you replace the chain timeously then your cassette should last for about 4 - 5 chains.Disagree, you can go much better. I've replaced my 10 spd Campag chain every 5000km, I'm on my 11th chain with the same cassette.
100Tours Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Disagree, you can go much better. I've replaced my 10 spd Campag chain every 5000km, I'm on my 11th chain with the same cassette. Lets just say the Shimano guidelines and the Campy guidelines are different..

porqui Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Two chain swop over is nonsense. Buy a chain checking tool, replace in time with a new. You will use one cassette and 4 to 5 chains, maybe more. Or not - science and mechanics say more is better (within reason). And why buy a chain checking tool if you can just use a good old fashioned inch rule - far more accurate.
Schnavel Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Here's some handy info.... http://www.wheelbuilder.co.za/chains/ Useful info, but swapping out your chain every 300km? That's less than a week's worth of riding - far too much admin.  Easier just to measure up to 0,75% and then put a new chain on. My current cassette and chain rings have around 16000km on them and are all still looking good - I am on my 4th chain though.
Sidmouth Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 If you replace the chain timeously then your cassette should last for about 4 - 5 chains.this works. I do around 5 chains per cassette, I get around 3000KM per chain, but i clean often
