Brake disc replacement

I see comments on the web about pros replacing discs with pads or every 2-3 sets of pads. I have never ever replaced a disc for that reason. I did upgrade one bike to a 203mm front rotor and have swapped other rotors around but on one of my bikes I built up, I am still on the same discs that were on the original bike 4-5 years ago and have done several thousand km. Brakes are still powerful.

Am I cruisin for a bruisin?

Or when the surface is worn unevenly I.e. It starts getting ridges then replace.

Over heated disc rotors should also be replaced. Easy spotted by the blue to brown discolouration just off the brake track

Define overheated disc rotors? Color just means it was heated to a certain temperature. But why do you recommend it be replaced on color banding alone (caused by oxide layer formation and its effect on incident light)?

Pads and caliper seals can be damaged due to sustained heating, but the disc, made of steel?

Just question, what's is the main diferrence in 203mm vs 180mm in front?

Crap load more stopping power over a 180 but overkill for a XC type bike unless you only go downhill and weigh 120kg

12.7% extra leverage - that's huge

More area (larger circumference) to dissipate heat
