The weird part is I kind of agree with cyclists not being allowed on the roads.

SA roads were never built to cater for bicycles so car/bicycle interaction is always going to be a problem and the car ain't ever going to lose a car/bicycle battle.

The solution is, of course, the people on bicycles and in cars actually giving a **** about each other but that isn't likely to happen soon...

YES, provided they follow the rules,,, just like everyone else.

+1

Else take up a safer option on a MTB / Gravel Bike where you can go onto the sidewalk or shoulder. Speed isn't everything  :whistling:

It's always great spending time assessing something where the outcome is meaningless... Will bicycles ever be banned from our roads - no. simple.

Agreed...but....hopefully time spent assessing is also time spent debating and highlighting problems.

Having lived in Denmark for close on 2 years now I find it unbelievable/crazy/weird/dangerous how countries can allow cars and bicycles to be on ONE stretch of road. It's madness! When I go home and ride and a truck zips past me with a 50cm gap I nearly soil my chamois. For 4 decades it wasn't a problem...until I rode without cars and trucks right next to me.

This issue is not going to go away. Our ever increasing urban density (world wide) means we will naturally gravitate towards bicycles, motor bikes and mass public transport systems. Also, we will be seeing many more commuters on the road as the price of petrol is going to hit the working and lower classes very hard. Taxis are becoming unaffordable.

People need to learn patience and how to drive their cars with due care. We need to build a culture of safety and respect for the rules of the road and all its users. I really think that cycling laws and the rights of all road users should appear in the licensing curriculum. There is far too much ignorance out there.

LOL!

Shouldn't the real questions be:

Should drunk drivers be allowed on the road?

Should drivers texting be allowed on the road?

The problem is being looked at from completely the wrong perspective.....

The real question is ... Should cars be allowed on the road?  I say if they obey the rules why not.

was going to say the exact same thing!

On another note, should bicycles be allowed on sidewalks?

Should pedestrians be allowed on cyclists' sidewalks if cyclists aren't allowed on the roads?

How long is a piece of string?

If you wake up at 3am, plant an orange tree seed, and play angrybirds until you leave for work, would the piece of string have a different outlook on it's life?

Whats the purpose and goal of the question?

Same here.  Not a facetious question either given that the roads also weren't built in many cases to take the load of traffic they have to today, and numbers keep on increasing.
