  1. 1. Do you do it?

    • I only text when I am stationary at traffic light, I know it is still illegal but I pay the fine and it has nothing to do with you.

    • I only use my phone when I need the GPS function, yes it illegal but I need to find my destination.

    • I don’t touch my phone while driving, will stop to text or get GPS ready.

It's not just texting and driving that makes the roads unsafe.

In a new study out of Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, researchers tracked real-time behaviors of drivers with radars, sensors, and cameras in order to learn which distractions were more dangerous than others.

They found that people who were emotional while driving — angry, sad, crying, or agitated — were 10 times more likely to increase their risk of a crash than people who weren’t emotional. Speeding increased the risk of a crash by 13 times, as well as improper driving decisions and unfamiliarity with a road or area.

It wasn’t only texting or talking on the phone that had an impact on drivers; people who used car touchscreens — for example, GPS platforms — spent more time with their eyes off the road than people who weren’t distracted by “screens.” Past research has shown people who text and drive are 23 times more likelyto get in a crash compared to those who don’t. A 2013 study found that distracted drivers in general — people who were texting, talking on the phone, eating, or applying makeup — raised pedestrian deaths by 50 percent.

Here's one for all the parents:

Kids In Cars 12 Times More Distracting For Drivers Than Talking On Cell Phones

Driving with children isn’t just slightly more dangerous; it’s a full 12 times more dangerous, according to the study. When researchers installed cameras in the cars of 12 families over a three-week period, they found talking on the phone only accounted for one percent of distractions. Distractions from children, meanwhile, accounted for 12 percent of all distractions. Over the course of an average 16-minute trip, parents that had kids present spent three minutes and 22 seconds with their eyes not on the road.

Never mind texting - what about yaking away and not concentrate on driving?

Happens so often now - driving behind someone (often in the fast lane) who is driving slowly and car drifting in and out of the lane, then you manage to get past them and see they are having a good ole chat on their phone! What do you do? I hoot profusely,

Oooooh that gets my blood boiling!!!!! I hoot like a mad man! SAdly most people don't care, but i make sure to get my point across!

that's a fact. Kids demand attention. My wife drives with her rear view mirror positioned so she can see the childseat not the road behind her! Drives me nuts!

I always drive with the childseat behind the passenger seat not the drivers seat. That way when I check my blind spots I can make quick eye contact with the little one in the kiddies seat. win-win

Do not get me started on kids that are not strapped into proper kids seats!

That is the epitome of STUPID PARENTING.

You do not have a valid argument to not have your kid strapped into their seat, NO YOU DON'T, don't even TRY!

Cost of the loss of a child or the disablement of a child > than any other argument.

RANT OFF.

Too many distractions to ban - no driving with kids (worse than phones imo), no consuming of food & drink while driving, no make-up etc etc.

I dont have a solution - Tesla autopilot?

So if there are so many things to ban, we should do nothing?

I agree 100%. I bumped a car in the traffic years ago while being distracted by my son. Wife had  a far worse fender bender when our youngest unstrapped himself and stood up between the seats. Luckily no injuries.

Is that what he said?

I dont know, that is why I am asking....what he means with this "Too many distractions to ban"

Is it really too many to ban/ police?

Edit: We can at least ban a few

1. Doing make-up

2. Eating your cereal

3. Writing stuff in a book / delivery sheet

The kids is nother story.....

Dont want to argue, this thread has had some interesting views and opinions

I wish I even had the ability to split my concentration between texting and driving!

Not that I want to text and drive, I just wish I had the ability to split my concentration like that.

Banning it is easy

Enforcing it is the problem

Sorry I haven't read through the 4 pages but why is it illegal to use my phone as a GPS if it is in a cradle and connected to my bluetooth?

Genuine question.....

Because Quagga said so.

Genuine question.....

Nope it is not illegal that way

Only illegal if you keep in your hand.

Well that is what I read.
