Guys, I will be riding my first CTCT this year. I am unsure whether to take my bike by air with me (I have an Evoc bike bag) or to use one of the many transport companies running between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The hotel I'm staying at will be pretty close to the start line.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Check with your carrier, many require a hefty fee for the Argus period and you need to deliver to their Bulk Handling facility a week or so before.

Personally I prefer the bike transport option, or check on here if someone has a spare slot on their bike carrier and reimburse them accordingly.

Accuweather says 26 degrees with a 22km/hr SE gusting to 54km/hr....

the saturday 9th March shows simirl weather with the Monday offering a NW.

This means we could end up with a windless day or a humping SE

according to the podcast ballairs said it would be ready. but hey, who knows!

the other whoopsie was the grandparade is still under construction, might be moving back to the original start/adderley street

The taxi rank on the station deck is under construction and should be nearing completion. The Grand Parade is being used as a taxi rank.

How does the parking work? Its my first CTCT. We coming through from George but staying in Sommerset West. Late start at 09h36.

Park at VNA waterfront at the lookout point. Its in walking distance from finish and a short ride to start.

Thanks for that. I had no idea. I thought you simply rocked up at the check-in counter with your bike in your bag (seriously)!   I've booked with the Bike Migration crowd now. Will have to now figure how the heck to collect my bike at Greenpoint... Still waiting for my seeding too.

I usually dont fly, have done so once or twice though.

20 odd years ago the airlines would take your bike free of charge. then they started charging.

This year at the last minute we decided to fly, I looked at the options and the hassle of packing (I dont have a bike bag so it would need to go in a box), finding the right car to hire when  you get there etc. etc. and i decided that I'd just use one of the bike transport companies listed on the CTCT website.

Jogie has been very professional so far and the convenience of just dropping the bike off with him this sunday then picking it up either day before or race day, followed by handing it back to him at the end of the race just made life easier.

I couldn't agree more. It's very convenient. And pretty cost effective too.

It's actually not entirely like that any longer. Flew with my bike 2 years ago, you do rock up to check-in on the day, no need to go a week before.

Saying that, I'd rather ship it with one of the transport companies, it's just not worth the hassle of trying to get your bike bag into a Picanto.

If your Hotel is in town, then it's a short Uber to Greenpoint to collect your bike and a gentle ride back.

I am meeting some family from overseas in Cape Town (elderly relative needs to come for a specific medical checkup), so effectively killing two birds with one stone. Because of the family factor, my son and my wife are coming with me. We are all going to stay at the Southern Sun Waterfront. Which Is about 2 Km from Greenpoint. I had to look at Google Maps to figure out how I would be able to ride from the stadium to the hotel (which is pretty close to the starting point). So I reckon I will go pick up my bike probably on Saturday and then just doddle across back to the hotel. Not sure if it is safe to do that but I'm not seeing any choice. I guess after the race, I just return my bike again to the transport people (who will still be at the stadium) and then take an Uber back to the hotel. I am not at all familiar with Cape Town or it surrounds and I have no idea what this particular ride is going to be like. But I am quite looking forward to it.

Not even Uber (too expensive) R10.00 buys you a one way trip to V&A / Greenpoint with any one of the hundreds of minibus taxis around.

edit: The Hotel might even have a courtesy bus driving up and down to Greenpoint stadium.
