How to find cycling mojo

Maybe he's just over it? Been competitive for too long and now just needs a break from it all.

I lost my interest (mojo?) with Rugby. I haven't watched a single match in about 6 months and couldn't be happier. This Saturday morning I'll be outside enjoying my ride whilst there's some or other rugby match happening around 09h30.

Back to cycling... maybe there was a crash, a close call or an injury?

His last ride was a crappy rain filled 4 degree pearler...

in amongst all of this?

Seriously though, I think the issue goes beyond just getting on a bike - and your lack of a 12th rider for DC. I think you need to make time for an off bike chat, anything else is just speculation. If you really care, and go to the effort I"m sure he will appreciate it.

Yeah, 11th and 12th rider for the DC team is the last worry. Its one day. Just trying to get past is it cycling he is off or us he is off :P

If its not fun anymore, I dont think any money will help. We all go through slumps.

I appreciate the input.

This might get a bit deep, but when I lost my cycling mojo (been MTBing for 20+ years) it was due to depression.

Riding was my life, but depression made me not want to to ride anymore.

So I'd say, his lost mojo is only a symptom, you need to find the problem. Take him out for a dop and have a chat. You might find out what the problem is.

This.

Or perhaps he has a possessive significant other?

Some people turn reclusive when something is amiss in their personal lives.

I have been there - where your drive to improve all the time almost makes it a chore.

Have to ask what motivates you? Buddies generally help in this space, as I forgot how much fun it was just riding with mates, the banter and chats on the trail or the coffee shops.

Sometimes you just need a change.

I've found that I tend to change sports every 6-7yrs, partially due to starting to pickup overuse injuries but also because I need a new challenge. The desire to go out & train just starts to wane & then due to loss of fitness when you do get back out with your mates it's just hard work.

Interestingly cycling has always been the one thing that I go back to, either just for a few months over summer, or like now for a year or two.

Nothing wrong with becoming a fair weather "casual" cyclist while pursuing other sporting interests. It does just mean that he's unlikely to join any group rides as he'll feel (even if not true) that's he's the weakest link.

Thats what we thought, does not even want to coffee ride.

I tend to lose some motivation towards the end of the year when I get tired of our local routes and trails. The thought of riding the same route for the umpteenth time just sounds boring and getting out there just feels like a schlep. Going out and exploring some new routes and trails helps. No worries about volume or distance but just getting out there and having a fun ride.

How do you know for sure he's not riding, maybe he's got a whole load of private rides on strava with some cooler group or just by himself?! What gets me on your original post, is that you don't speak to him because he's not riding. That means you don't see him outside of cycling, so is he really a friend or just someone to keep the paceline going. BUT just by starting this thread you're probably the former.

Sometimes it's nice to know people miss you, even if there's a valid reason for it.

So one of my riding buds has lost his mojo with respect to cycling.

I am not 100% sure why, as he is not cycling so can not shoot the breeze on the ride.

Coming of TOGH and a rather wet winter its not been lekker booty calls every ride.

Is time away the best option, he has been riding for 5 years constantly and never really taken more than 3 weeks off.

Main reason I ride my bike is the mates.

Any help, previous experience or suggestions appreciated.

Gawd, I'd also give up cycling if I had to spend my Saturday and Sunday mornings with a bunch of grown men in matching skinsuits, pedaling around on their plastic bicycles. The public humiliation!
