This just makes my blood boil.

You fall asleep at the wheel on a long straight Karoo road.

Main road with loads of traffic lights?

5am Saturday morning of pay day weekend?

I might be wrong, but really hope the driver was tested.

RIP to the cyclist :-(

strength to their family and the families of the injured.

I remember seeing a couple of deaths in the Cradle a few years ago. Both were natural causes but both were still rough to see, more so because in both cases relatives were on the scene. Thankfully I've never come across something like this.

Fell asleep and the wheel? on the phone talking **** to someone? still pissed from the night before. . . . ENOUGH OF THIS bull**** MAN,

Shift worker on the way home?

Public service doctor coming off a 24hr duty?

Speculation achieves nothing.

My wife made the same point this morning when I got angry about this. Sometimes we struggle to see things objectively when it’s so close to home.

You're right. Let's see if the driver was any of those first.

Very very sad news.

I am however also in agreement not to jump to conclusions.

During the 80's I worked for the Government and sometimes had no more than 6 hours sleep in a 36 to 48 hour period. I was working about 50km away from home and fell asleep behind the wheel more than once. Not cool, wrote off 1 government vehicle and damaged 2 others in a four year period. Thank God it never involved other vehicles or people but falling asleep behind the wheel does happen and is sometimes inevitable. Not condoning it for one second.

Prayers are with the family.

On the way to piketberg the other week for the bo berg ride I missed the sign that signalled the end of the dual carriageway. I was driving on the wrong side of the road oblivious to the mortal peril I was putting myself and two other vehicles in.

At the last moment i realised that the headlights ahead of me were in the same lane as I was. The vehicle to my left realised my idiocy before i did and left space for me to come back on to the correct side of the road. I don't know how close it was to an horrific accident that would have killed me and others.

I drove on full of adrenaline, relief, horror at what might have happened and that I had been given a very lucky break.

I think the guy on my left might have been a cyclist on his way to the race. If so, sorry and thanks.

I think my point is that we don't know why or how this accident happened.

It's another tragedy on our roads and again, thoughts and condolences to all who are touched by so terrible a thing.

Ignorance is not an excuse. A Dr or shift worker should know better. How is it any different to driving while drunk?

Driver survives and another cyclist is dead.

I unfortunately rode passed / into this I am presuming shortly after it happened and the body was covered and the police had cordoned off road. The car that hit the cyclists (polo) showed evident mark where impact was made and the bike was a mess.

I rode to the turn off and actually went home after, mojo was gone and all I thought was how terrible the repercussions are for the family(s) going forward. I also immediately thought drunk driver or similar but we dont know until info is released but in general the road lawlessness in SA is another level of disregard cause as I was riding towards the scene 3 taxis were jumping red lights and racing down the main road.

I hope the families are ok going forward involved with the cyclist.

R.I.P and condolences to the families involved.

Not long ago a Welsh driver fell asleep behind the wheel and hit a cyclist causing massive bodily harm. The court found him guilty on reckless driving and was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment.

Driving while tired is very dangerous and people that do it should be charged the same as drunk drivers. You know if you are too tired to drive and should desist immediately. I have on many road trips pulled over and napped for an hour or slept on a couch because I was too tired to drive. I do this because my Grandfather died in a crash when falling asleep while driving. Fortunately, he did not take anyone with him.
