How worn can it get?

I have a bit of a reputation for riding stuff well beyond their prime and was wondering just how worn others have had things on their bikes?

Apart from the front Schwalbe which was put on in June (it was slightly used) the rest of the stuff shown were put on last year in December. Quite impressed with how far those Taya chains and Chaoyang tyres go. I'll see if I can "stretch" (pun intended) this to December to make it a full year.

Bike is nearing 20,000km now.

Normally wrt to tyres the key indicator to me is the amount of punctures I get all of a sudden.  But then again since in Europe I take note of the tread for the mountain bike when cycling in less favourable conditions.

The casette depends on how well it behaves.  As long as the gears are not jumping it stays.  The chain gets replaced (on the road bike) at about 75% wear.  The last casette on my roadbike when I sold it had about 15 000 km without any problems.

I didn't count the Km's up on mine, but rode it for ages, especially when we was a lot dryer in the Cape. but BANG.. all of a sudden things went pear shaped fast, all in the middle of races.. Thats when I realized it was time to sort it out...

Good luck

20 000km with those pedals...sjoe!

that drivetrain is beyond gone, will only work with itself from here on.

what length is the chain now?

The problem with riding a chain and cassette well past it's prime is that when you replace it you also have to replace the chainring/s, which then inflates an already expensive exercise.

You got some proper mileage though!

Chain was shortened a little when I put it on, can't remember by how much. The groupset has about 5000~7000km on it as I commute (11km + 25km) on the bike daily and weekends I do an event/long ride. The bike is on 19,800 now.

I don't see the need to rotate chains as I am happy with distance I get out of the whole thing combined.

Now if I do start to see an increase in puncture of course I will replace them, however usually in my situation the rubber degrades to such an extent you can see the carcass of the tyre, then it's about time to go.

There is a chainbreaker taped to my top tube and it is there for the day this chain snaps. I'll use it to fix the chain just to get home. About the lube, yes, Maxx Wax and loads of it, 3 applications after one another, that is what helps this ride smooth. Pics were taken before I lubed it.

Edit : Should I replace the RD pulley wheels? Never did that before. Cost of replacement for me is cheap, R550 for a cassette, R250 for a chain and R400 for a new chainring.
