Where in Stellenbosch did they steal it? I leave my bike locked on the back of the bakkie quite often.

im not sure if any of stellenbosch is safe

so not really relevant

in fact not a good idea to leave a bike on a vehicle in rsa for an extended period ie longer than 10 mins alone

not safe

I've actually wondered if Insurance will pay out if a bike is stolen off the back of your bike rack.

It can almost become as technical as having your car remote jammed and insurance won't pay out as there's no sign of forced entry

My understanding is that most insurance companies won’t cover for theft when your bike is left unattended in public. Some even require that your bike needs to be locked when on your own property.

Why then have insurance. Only for when the pricks hi-jack you?

The bike was locked to the vehicle, with a cable lock, it was not visible unless you were standing next to the car. I was planning a lunchtime ride but got stuck at work, the only reason the bike was in the vehicle

My insurance will pay out, but with some provisos - one being that the bike was locked with a certain thickness of lock (can't remember the exact mm), or locked to an "approved" bike rack. Eg: Thule Pro Ride.

My general rule of thumb is not to leave the bike unattended though. I do sometimes stop at a garage for a cooldrink on the way home after a ride, but then I just park my car where it stays in my field of vision, and it is locked to the bike rack which is locked to my car (although I have seen videos of guys breaking open a Thule bike rack in a matter of 30 seconds).

I had this same question with a previous insurer, so what happens of the bike is stolen of my bike rack, is it covered? The only answer they could give was; if the vehicle shows forced entry yes otherwise no.

Ok but my bike is on a carrier.... I could hear the gears grinding in her head, " yes sir it is covered only if the vehicle shows forced entry"
