[Event] LCE Cycle Challenge

LCE Cycle Challenge + MTB

Recommended Posts

Event Name: LCE Cycle Challenge
When: 10 November 2018
Where: Langebaan Country Estate, Western Cape
Category: Road

The event venue is on the driving range of the Langebaan Country Estate which is situated in the picturesque village of Langebaan. As the route winds through the West Coast National Park, it takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery on the West Coast. The route closely hugs the shoreline of South Africa’s only saltwater lagoon as you pass through Strandveld vegetation before making your way across the peninsula that divides the Atlantic Ocean and the Langebaan Lagoon. Take time to appreciate the azure blue waters of this fantastic coastline as you pedal past landmarks such as Preekstoel, Kraalbaai, Geelbek and Schrywershoek. Be on the lookout for the many animals that roam the West Coast National Park, as this in itself makes it a very special ride. The rolling hills have interesting names such as Skunk Hill, Fanie se Kop and Seeberg and make for a challenging, yet enjoyable day out. The ride finishes at the top of Stumpnose Rock (affectionately known as Mamba Hill) with a breathtaking view of the lagoon as the backdrop.

Happened at around 38km in, we went past it in the break and it wondered towards the road. The next group on road came by it was on the road and charges at group. Brushed Waldo shoulder but took out 2 guys, broken collarbone and hubber crashed into the fallen!

Strength to those guys. Passed a porcupine and buddy saw a snake....part of the risk riding in a nature reserve. Was good fun though ????

Awesome event, pity it is unable to attract more than 264 riders. Apart from ostrich incident, it has full road closures. Langebaan is "far" but for me it is the same like driving to grabouw, stellenbosch or Wellington to do an MTB. Great job by organisers

Would have loved to ride it but was in that area last week for the Yzerfontein race, think ideally they need to spread it out further from each other.

This is why us WC roadies dont deserve nice things. Full road closure, different scenery to the usual Paardeberg surrounds but we can't be bothered to drive to Langebaan.

One thing that can be said though, 2 weeks out from DC there were many cyclists out on the roads doing their last long group training ride. Maybe a different date will help.

Was bummed to have missed it because of flu, but I'm sure with the wind it must have been a real gutter fest

Wind not a huge factor. I must say full road closure makes it really cool. Yip, DC is a factor but there are many more not doing DC. Anyway , I like it and will definitely be back.

Fortunately there were no broken bones. What a bizarre moment in the race.I just got off the front after a turn and move off to the back on the group when suddenly a massive bird (aka an ostrich) seemed to panic for whoever reason and ran straight into the road. The middle of the bunch seemed to all narrowly missed him however myself and 2 blokes (Jared and Donavan) from Team Kreepy Krauly weren't so lucky.

Jared bailing to the deck to avoid while Donavan hit the bird and I found myself sailing straight into a feathered Donavan.

The bird didn't seem to phased as he went on his way.

Just a side not, the emergency crew got lost while trying to find us. It's a 1 way in and out ???? thankfully none of us were dying.

We had a lekker day in the C-F group. It seemed that most of the group formed one large peloton which stayed together for most of the race. Finished 20mins behind the winner which in my books is a good ride. Mamba hill still stays a nasty surprise for that last 500m. Shout out to the Outriders guys from A-B that started with us and did some long pulls at the front.

Saw the two ostriches out in the field with the victims of the crash on the side of the road, strongs to you guys, hope you heal up soon.

Yesterday's MTB race was also a lot of fun, well worth making a weekend away and doing both events.
