So does anyone know Chris van Zyl?

no one picked him in the fantasy game, and he's lying a solid 3rd.

a bit hard to google him, as it's a common name, that he shares with the current WP captain

but I did find this:

in 2016 he rode around italy in 136 hours

and if the name rings a bell further it's because although he hasn't finished the Munga yet, it's not for lack of trying:

2015: - http://trackleaders.com/munga15i.php?name=Chris_Van_Zyl

Chris van Zyl led until halfway and then withdrew. He’s back this year, no doubt better prepared and wearing his unfinished-business attitude…

2016 - didn't go much better, he got just past RV1

2017 -

pulled out at the same place as 2015

Some people sit in metal cages in long queues on their way to office cubicles until they cannot any more.

Some people get on their bikes and do magnificent things like the Munga.

Those back markers are fine ,,no probs,,their biggest danger is the predicted headwinds that's coming.

remember they have till Monday 12

So the back markers at 500km, do they have a realistic chance of finishing?

As far as I can tell the Lanterne rouge is Jan Viljoen. He is at 496km @ 48h20. Cut of is 120hr, so he should make it at this rate.

The tracker shows Fietie as the back marker buts that's incorrect ,,he way ahead of that.Faulty tracker.

What is the rule around the cut-off? Can you fall 1 or 2 hrs behind the cut-off marker and then subsequently make up that time and get in front of it again?

Not too sure but Alex will advise someone that if they are not ,say in Sutherland by a certain time they simply won't make cut off.I don't think they remove you from the course.

From the rules:  https://mtb.themunga.com/how/rules

14. The Race cut off is 120 (one hundred and twenty) hours i.e. 5 (five) days after the start gun goes off for the Race. Those riders that are still out in the field after the cut off time will be collected together with their bicycles and equipment in sweeper vehicles and transported to the nearest race station. From this race station transportation will be at the riders own cost.

16. The Race organizers shall implement cut-off points along the route which points must be reached by the riders within specific times. It is the Race Directors discretion whether or not he wants to enforce these cut-offs. These cut-offs and times shall be as follows:

12pm Thursday at Race Village 1 at Vanderkloof Dam

12pm Friday at Race Village 2 at Britstown

12pm Saturday at Race Village 3 at Loxton

12pm Sunday at Race Village 4 at Sutherland

9am Monday at Race Village 5 at Ceres
