That breastfeed post made me think, do vegans breastfeed?

Human milk is specifically designed for baby humans. I'm sure you would do your child a disservice if you avoid it.

Why do you think vegans would not breastfeed?

I wonder what they give the babies who's moms aren't able to breastfeed.

There is no 'right' answer to this scenario.

If a woman can't provide sufficient breast milk to feed her child, then it is up to her to decide whether she wants to feed her child with formula that contains animal products. The health of her newborn is (or should be) her primary concern.

Luckily, there are a number of vegan options on the market. Also, Nestle has even developed a cost-effective vegan formula, which is HUGE.

Good point, if you're unable, you have to find a solution - that's a sad scenario for all concerned.

However my statement and yours Gen apply broadly to all people, I still don't understand why vegans wouldn't breastfeed?

(Perhaps its not a real question from Carbon kooi, I did laugh when I first read it)

On the topic of breastfeeding, I recently listened to a podcast where this was discussed and how in certain places, breast milk donation is being used to support mothers who can't sufficiently breastfeed their babies.

It's either this one: https://plantproof.com/being-earthy-andy-vegan-mother-and-internet-sensation/

Or this one: https://plantproof.com/creating-a-conscious-vegan-family-with-ellen-fisher/

Well worth a listen.

I guess in our modern society, where we have largely lost our sense of community, donated breast milk might seem 'icky' or just plain weird, but it actually makes so much sense. It's the food that nature has developed over millions of years' of evolution to nourish young children, so if you can provide it to your children in a non-traditional way, why not.

I now haven't listened to the podcasts.. but with this I immediately worry about how healthy the donated milk is.. did the donor eat and drink healthy, what guarantees do they give and can they even give guarantees?

I don't think it's a regulated thing, so there's probably no governmental middleman to intervene. Probably more community based - you know someone donating and get to know them or perhaps there's a clinic or some kind of center which connects folks. Just my guess.
