There we even number stickers green with arrow pointing to the left and red with arrow to the right.

As well as road signs saying keep left

So no real excuses for not knowing it !!

?where. can you take a pic of one and post it.

Its in the K53 learners book. Its in the test.

But then I hear of the R2500 go straight to license issue option and I'm not surprised many don't know the rules.

Ever heard the argument "Its like a degree. Just learn it to pass and then do what everyone else does at work...Experience is what counts." Ja well I've heard that from plenty.

and then there's also the reality that maybe the sign boards are there, but they're just to busy reading their Whatsapp messages.

Maybe a programmer should write a Rules of the Road spam app?

I must add, the amount of commentators on this thread that don't know the law regarding keep left, pass right, is both alarming as a cyclist and concerning as a motorist!

No need to be concerned, I do know the rules of the road re overtaking as well as the rules relating to freeway driving, was merely making an observation as related to the points that had been made earlier in the thread.

My point was that both situations are technically in breach of the law, but you know that but never mentioned it ...... Obviously.

Wrong, unless you are passing you must be in the left lane. Therefore only the person sitting in the right lane is in the wrong.

Indeed, that is the preferred road conduct (read the law)however, not always practical in respect of the often congested roadways as am sure you have experienced.

Thank goodness the hub is frequented by all these perfect drivers and cyclists that obey every single rule ever made, thankyou all for the valuable info, cannot believe that I have been driving in the wrong lane, too slowly and breaking all these laws all this time.

Consider myself schooled.

Yeah, when it gets busy it’s difficult to say when you passing etc.

Absolutely, many times I have been driving on a dual lane road and had some nutter drive so close behind me that I can see the whites in his eyes in my rearview mirror,he is trying to physically enforce the keep left pass right principle, but the reason that Im in the right lane is due to the fact that Im going to turn right at the next intersection.

People really need to chill out on the roads in Sa, drive slower, be calm, who cares if you gonna be 5 mins late, what is the rush, nothing can be that important (unless you drive an ambulance)

Some people are just way too stressed I reckon.

I dont subscribe to the "well I can join them since I can not change them"

I am going to try even just to make ME feel better that I tried to prevent and accident or someone getting killed. If I hoot at and texting driver and he puts his/her phone down or maybe they just think about it I might have prevented someone getting hurt.

You have to be careful Quagga, just dont hoot at Tony Soprano while he is texting "little Paulie" whilst driving, you may have prevented someone else getting hurt but wake up with tubes coming out your own nose

(Only kidding, your sentiments and motives are very noble, good on you ! )

all jokes aside - PLEASE be safe out there, on your bikes, in your cars, just be please be SAFE !

Festive season is here and the road use is even worse than before !!!

Went from Bellville to Klapmuts this morning, along the N1.  Knew there would be "some" holiday traffic ... and frankly there were not that many vehicles ....

BUT .... every few kilometers there would be ONE vehicle doing 80km/h - in the left lane, mindig his own business being perfectly "legal".

Now add the holiday traffic ... they guy towing his 7m caravan, doing 83km/h ... so he pulls over into the not-so-fast lane and starts to pass the slow moving traffic.

Now add the boy-racers ... swerving in and out of traffic to gain one more spot ....

I eventually just tucked in behind a truck for the last stint to Klapmuts ....

This afternoon the traffic was even worse in Bellville ...

PLEASE, forget about "legal" and "right" ... just be SAFE out there ....

Bike is insured, no worries there.

People should stop killing other road users, regardless of rules.

The rules are not working obviously.

For me it comes down to a lack of enforcement and tangible consequences. SA is too lienient

I dont need to read it to know that its victim blaming, all has the same vibe.

Starts with Personal story about how bike safety has touched them.

Noting they are a cyclist as well.

Spotted cyclist not obeying a road rule.

Cyclists are their own worst enemy and deserve to die.

Ctrl c, Ctrl v for the past 9 years on the bikehub.

Then people will chime in that they saw someone obeying the law but still annoying a road user.

Someone will suggest Mtbing and getting stabbed

Patch and I will knit pick.

Cyclists carry on being murdered by drivers regardless of who is obeying what laws.

Someone points out its victim blaming.

Some people dont understand what victim blaming is.

not too nitpick or anything :whistling:

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for flogging a dead horse, but with the carnage on our roads about to pass 800 fatalities this December, a quick breakdown of the stats:

(article from the 20th of December)

Road fatalities for December 2018 – the ugly truth:
  • A total of 767 people have been killed on SA roads over the festive period, 16% more than the previous year.
  • KwaZulu-Natal is the most dangerous province to drive in, with 162 fatalities recorded.
  • There have been 125 deaths in Gauteng, 89 in both Eastern Cape and Limpopo, 82 in Mpumalanga, 81 in Western Cape, 78 in Free State, and 57 in North West.
  • The Northern Cape has seen the least amount of fatalities (24), but is responsible for the highest increase in crashes causing death (71%).
  • Free State (+53%) and KZN (+46%) have also seen some of the sharpest increases in road deaths.
  • Human error is blamed for 86% of all incidents, with road and vehicle faults accounting for less than one-in-seven traffic collisions.
  • In total, 34 minibus taxis have been involved in fatal accidents.
  • Meanwhile, trucks are even more dangerous, accounting for 44 separate collisions.
  • There were 10 666 fines handed out to drivers who did not have a license, whereas 9 620 were for drivers who didn’t fasten their seat belts.
  • Incidents of hit-and-run (+17%), speeding (+14%), and reckless overtaking (+10%) also increased.

Tell me again how cyclists are at fault?
