Sunrace 12spd VS NX eagle

Hi

Just got GX for my dad on a xmas bike, he had XT 11/42 on his old bike. The one thing I didn't think about was the shifting using your index finger on Shimano which as it turns out is a must for my dad as his thumb goes numb during a ride.

so if shifting with your index finger is important don't go NX/GX....

Marc

Why did you not fit gripshift?

Went full NX 1x12 a month ago with 36t front ring. For me it is the perfect combo as I have never maxed out on revs on fast roads and the granny gear has only been used on the really steep hills. The only reason to go 10-50 cassette would be to save 300g, which is not worth it for me anyways... No regrets, very happy

NX is a massive “upgrade” from the Sunrace 12spd. I’ve done a couple of bikes with NX and it fits SO easy and it just works.

The Sunrace on the other hand.... 4 buddies thought they would save a bit and treat themselves to the lekker cheap Sunrace. All of them have stopped working properly in the past month. Shifting down with them all has been a major issue, and 2 of them up shifting was erratic.

You made a good call on the NX.

I made the change from XT 3x9 to Sunrace 1x12 and have just clocked 1,500k's on the new system and I have absolutely no regrets.  i don't have experience with other 1x systems so can't give a comparative opinion - but so far I'm seriously impressed with the Sunrace product......

This is quite an interesting comment.

Down shifting is a direct reaction to the cable being released. So is there something faulty with the spring in the RD?

Shifting up is the same but cable grab, so unless there is a problem with the ratchet in the shifter, then the cable inner/outers are getting caught somewhere or the tension and limit settings aren't done properly.

A badly installed XTR system will struggle to shift if not installed properly.

I can imagine gripes about the clutch/chain tension, the feel and ergonomics of the levers and how many/few gear changes you can make at once as well as the long term hardyness, but a well installed Tiagra/Rival/X3 groupset should shift seamlessly.

I have a number of friends, some very good bike riders (read past SA xco and marathon champs) who have warrantee'd their SRAM Eagle stuff more than 3 times due to RD failure/spring mech issues.

I just wonder if this is indicative of things starting to get 'too precise' in the pull arc. 12 gears in the same space where 9 or 10 used to be.

This doesn't sound like a fundamental issue... Especially when it happens all of a sudden... Surely this is setup related?

If your Shimano or sram setup is *** and it stops shifting well, you redo the setup and bobs your auntie.. But because it's sunrace, it must be the kit and setup isn't called into question at all? I dunno man, sounds strange...

But the maths just doesn't agree with opinion... You're one tooth larger on the bottom end but 4 larger up front? It's gonna be faster... Sure, it won't be as fast as a 10/36 but by then you're just getting silly on a MTB...

Yea maths never was my strong point, that's why I don't make any gearing decisions without first consulting :- http://www.bikecalc.com.  But you've already made your decision so enjoy.

Biggest reason I will be ditching my XO setup soon and going back to Shimano.

Not only shifting down with index finger, but multiple down shifts at once.

Oh, and not having to tweak adjustments on gears every 3 months.

****SRAM.

Shimano is a problem period. Also going bigger than 42 influences the shifting big time. I have also just removed my sunrace 50 from my xtr setup as it just does not work with Shimano. They also say don't go over 42.

Never in my life do I want Shimano on an mtb again. Not even for free.

Yip and with XD-R coming for road Shimano will never see my money again.... Ever.

If I buy a Crank it will be from Stages but more likely I'll be using quarq going forward. Just sick of Shimano poor design and expensive locked in replacement parts. Sick of warrantying shifters and dérailleurs. SRAM and campagnolo make better products because they are not fueled by the arrogance of monopoly. If they don't build better parts they go out of business so they just build better equipment on every level

I have both Sram and Shimano 11 speed with Sunrace 11/46 cassettes and have had no issues whatsoever, apart from the small gears wearing out too soon .I am trying out SramGx 1x12 this December ..GX is OK ;but i will be returning to shimano 2x11 .With the shimano gear locked on the derailer you cannot get chainsuck and the shifting is super smooth when using raceface sprockets on your crank .XTR was never ment to work with a 50 tooth at the back ,unless you use the new 1x12 XTR

I have GX 1*12 with a Sunrace 11-50 on one bike and XTR 1*11 with a Sunrace 11-50 on another ... In my case they both work I have no issues, maybe I'm less 'picky' and not as pro as you guys?

And yes I do ride a fair amount on both bikes, I do like the 'push pull' release on the Shimano but that's about the only real difference as far as I'm concerned.
