Fun fact, Suunto has a red arrow as logo. That is because they are actually Afrikaans and the arrow points to where you are going : Soon toe.

Suunto and Garmin have pretty much the same logo in different colors

My 2c look at the garmins. There are some Fenix 5's going for a decent price (livable price) now that the 6 is out.

Im waiting for mine to be delivered, upgrading from a samsung gear fit 2 thigamajig.

Where did you buy the Fenix 5 from and which one did you opt for?

I'm sorry I don't get the whole Garmin Fanboy thing.

FWIW I've got a suunto spartan trainer and it's been completely faultless. And it cost under 3k. Battery life is great. About 14 hours with the gps and hr monitor going. Syncs with my HR strap no problem.

My only 2 minor complaints is that backlighting is a bit poo and the opical HR thingy is a waste of time outdoors. Hence the strap.

me three.

bang for buck spartan trainer wrist is surely hard to beat

my face has taken some scratches, might even try and get that swapped out.

wow never noticed that! Suunto are far from the NKOTB

I got the fenix 5 normal glass one (struggled to find a sapphire version) ill put on a screen protector. I've always got my arm between some kind of machinery so better safe than sorry.

The other deciding factor was the price got it from Makro (Port elizabeth) for R6250.

Just something worth considering, especially for those of us you don’t have coaches or make use of platforms like training peaks or today’s plan, the Garmin platform gives quite useful insights, they spent a decent amount acquiring rights to I think what is called First Beats. But this is a database on which their analysis of activities, load, intensity etc it based.

Also, their devices allow for true ups and syncing, so an activity recorded on an edge will sync to Garmin connect, and then push to a wearable, so you can get a complete view of activities.

It’s not perfect, but a lot better than what Suunto and polar offer

Thanks for this. Just last week I glanced at my watch and noticed the top of the screen said true up. I had never seen it before and it disappeared very quickly. I thought I was going mad and tried to find it again. Now I know what it was doing.

EDIT: How often does it true up? I have just looked now and My watch is only showing rides up till the 28th of Jan.

In the end it was between the Garmin FR35, Polar, and Huawei ....

Huawei providing the best specs, lowest price and a slim line build.  On paper the best the best bet, in this entry level GPS included line-up.

The Garmin was marked down a bit at Sportsman's Warehouse.  I know the brand, I know where to go for straps .... and mostly I would like to believe that spares will be readily available for some time ...  Also keeping all me stats on one platform makes more sense to me, at this stage.

The massive size of the Polar put me OFF !!  Never even looked at the price ....

And thus the FR35 is now on charge.

I love how STRAVA, a social media platform, has such a big influence on which GPS units people buy.

Before you shoot me down, it is just that. Movescount, training peaks and hosts of other non shareable programs do a better job at data allocation than strava. Quite a few are free.

It's crazy to think that social media and the need to share/brag/get kudos etc is such a bugbear/influence in such a large market.
