Airbus 340-600 Centre Landing Gear brakes whit wheels in the back ground and axles between wheels and brakes.

Centre Landing Gear with wheels and brakes removed. As you can see from the Left Landing Gear, the aircaft has been jacked up. It goes a lot higher but we only jack it fully when we want to do a landing gear retraction check.

When last did SAA land any new birds?

They have a bit of catching up to do .. like the A350, what a beautiful aircraft. I've flown a few  times in the Singapore Airlines fleet, my fav airline and passenger aircraft. Throw in a few Tigers  and its a Win Win,

I was going to ask the same question.  The first time my mother-in-law came to visit us was with SAA and last year she flew with Qatar.  She said she would rather fly the longer flights with Qatar than SAA as the SAA aircraft sounded like "Rammelkaste".  Now she flew with the B777 and the A350.  She was very impressed with especially the A350.

New or Newly Leased?

Would they lease older aircraft rather than new ones?

From what I understand there are big gains to be made in terms of efficiency and lower operating costs with the more modern twins for the long haul

Are they still an only Airbus operation?  Bit of a silly move that was, dumping all their Boeings and everything that went with it, it was one of those corrupt deals.

btw Air Zim is still flying their 737-100's If it aint bust don't fix it!

For the past 6 years or so every time I fly to Cape Town I see a British Airways 747 parked there. It doesn't seem to have moved in all that time. Does anyone know the story?

BA fly daily between London and CT with a 747.  2 Flights actually ... BA43 and BA59 of which both are serviced by B747 aircraft. They land the morning and return the evening.

.......and they probably have the same parking spot reserved for them every time.

Ok, that explains why there's a 747 parked there all the time. Fanks!

We got a few new A320 last year but the company has NO money so can't afford to get more/new aircraft. We have slowly been replacing the the A340-600 fleet with A330-200 which is a lot more efficient and cheaper to operate. But money is the problem.............

Up till mid last year we still had a few Boeing 737-800 but those are now flying with Mango or FlySafair. So now only have Airbus. Yip corrupt deal indeed when we dumped the Boeings for this Airbus rubbish. When we had Boeing and Airbus over here showings us their aircraft it was an A340-600 and a B777. The 777 unfortunately was having maintenance issues so wasn't tested as much as the 340. Then of course there was that whole corrupt military deal with Airbus which eventually went south anyway. So so sad. I miss our Jumbo's, I loved working on them.

I am sure I ready BA have / are started with the Dreamliner to SA in place of the 747's- although the A380 still floats in the FAJS every morning.

Virgin bring their dreamliner here fairly often. But AFAIK BA only bring the jumbos and 380. They also bring a B747-8f sometimes.
