DJTerblanche Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 If spending that money, make sure to buy something with disc brakes. Absolutely, that's what you'll likely miss from trying to spend R15k in the classifieds. The OP has stated he has R30k to spend on a fast bike. If I was in the same boat right now I wouldn't settle for anything that isn't (hydraulic!) disc. Nah, do not go for disc brakes. Those bikes are just a danger in the peloton, they break way to fast and then guys behind you have nowhere to go with normal breaks. Disc brakes offer better stopping power and modulation under all conditions. They don't fade as the rim heats up. They add to the longevity of expensive carbon rims as you no longer wear out a braking surface on the rim itself, but rather a much cheaper rotor. By 2021 no manufacturer will offer a top-of-the-range bike without hydraulic disc brakes. The pros are switching as well and soon everyone will be riding discs as that is all neutral service will offer. (yes yes they ride what the sponsors are selling, I know. But even the loudest critics in the pro peleton are silent now.) Same argument of "other people don't have it, they'll ride into the back of you" was made against ABS in the 1980s. Now it's literally illegal to sell a new car in the EU without ABS. The superior modulation of the latest hydraulic disc brakes actually totally counters this issue as now you have better control over your rate of deceleration. Was the difference in stopping distance between those using rim brakes on carbon vs aluminium rims in the same peleton negligible? The issues around flex and noise have largely been addressed in the latest gen of frames, wheelsets and groupsets. While I would have agreed with you before, that has all changed in 2019. Discs are the future.
DJTerblanche Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Some good/valid comments I am still not convinced - Very happy with my carbon wheels with aluminium break surface.
Raleigh76 Posted February 1, 2019 Author Posted February 1, 2019 Great stuff - reckon I'll go with disc breaks

Discs are the future. In the Sportif this past weekend there was a very nice probably 2019 Canyon Ultimate with disc brakes making Ninja sounds (ching, ching, ching) in the bunch for the whole race. To me disc brakes on a road bike is just making a simple thing complicated.
porqui Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Great stuff - reckon I'll go with disc breaks Waste of money spend it on better wheels or something else. I ride a 35 year old Colnago with Modolo brakes. Never not been able to stop. Oh the brake "blocks" are still original. Bike has done 25 argusses some sub-3
Transporter Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Fortuner and sharp in the same sentence.....
Noshow Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Depending on body shape and how flexible you are consider one of the more relaxed geometry bikes like the Specialized Roubaix, Cannondale Synapse, Giant Defy etc. Should be just as fast but more comfortable and smoother handling. Better than having to turn the stem upside down to fit. Some of the out and out race bikes are pretty harsh and twitchy.
Eugene Posted March 6, 2019 Posted March 6, 2019 We are told that There are tons of advantages to disc brakes, but the vast majority of pros still seem to ride rim brakes (from what I see on TV anyway). Watching 70.3 world Champs last year, the vast majority of the top pros also rode rims. I find it strange that these sponsored pros are not riding discs. Why? Surely manufacturers would want them to ride the latest discs. Personally, I don't like discs, but Ive accepted that they are probably going to take over.

Robbie Stewart Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 If one want's a bike like a Fortuner, does that mean the bike should be top-heavy and generally unstable?

DirtyFrank Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 It`s not about the bike, get fit and strong, get to your fighting weight and you`ll be able to ride most properly geared bikes to a sub 3 if you have it in you. There`s probably 15% max in it between a 7kg carbon racebike and a competent starter special for a single race, but you`ll get more satisfaction putting the effort into improving your own capabilities than trying to buy speed! But we all do love a shiny new bike/ride/lover when the itch strikes!
DirtyFrank Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Forgot to add, don`t forget comfort, lots of fast light bikes out there that will send a jolt up your spine over every bump but if you`re slightly longer in the tooth look at comfort too because if its you`re going to have it for a while like a proper Fortuner then you`ll value the comfort part for sure!
Eugene Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 If one want's a bike like a Fortuner, does that mean the bike should be top-heavy and generally unstable? Nah.. It should just be a bike that everyone rides. Oh... And seeing a Fortuner is an off road vehicle, the bike should at least be a full suspension.
