To all motorists:

There's a place in your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could be much
Brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try
You'll find there's no need to cry
In this place you'll feel
There's no hurt or sorrow

There are ways to get there
If you care enough for the living
Make a little space
Make a better place

Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me

I'm very much on the fence here.

On the one hand I hate social media ranting more than anything, but on the other we as a cycling community also need to take each other to task for dangerous behavior.

We seem to rally together very nicely here on Hubland whenever some guy is doing some dodgy dealings in the classifieds and it gets posted on the forums.

Why should this be any different?

As per the titles, these posts call out individuals on a public platform with whom they have a personal issue. It's a bit cowardish, to recruit support in an effort to legitimize your stance and turn it into mob justice of some sorts. It like bullying in a group where the person turns to his mates to back him up against one individual, because he was too much of a pissy to take him on one on one.

Show me the stats where horrible cycling resulted in the death of the cyclist vs horrible driving resulting in the death of cyclists

One evening I was cycling home when a bakkie pulled up next to me and the driver warned me that my backlight was really weak and he didn't see me until he came really close (turns out I didn't notice the batteries were failing).

I really appreciated that warning, for some reason it didn't cross my mind to lecture him on the many deaths caused by motorists.

To the OP, no problem with you posting that as I am sure your intentions are good - but next time it might even be better to drive up to the cyclist and tell him in person rather than posting it on the hub few hours later and hope that he is reading,.

Mmmmm, how do you notice 47 moving violations by motorists in the short period of time?

Are you sitting next to the road, watching the goings on, or you travelling and texting and driving?

Looking out of my office window. Nice big intersection right outside. Total crapfest out there.

Why not do both?

Educate the cyclist directly, then pass on that same message to a group a cyclist.

Maybe we should take the advice and not get so damn sensitive each time somebody points out something that could help us.

Having been sworn at by a cyclist for just shaking my head because he was riding on the road instead of the cycle lane my view is that if you want to ride on roads that are dangerous by all means go for it.

If you get killed I will not feel sorry for you.

I will feel sorry for your family and the driver of the car who will be traumatised by the experience

So I'm not an overly regular poster/reader of the hub and so amn't aware of all the letters John has been getting!

I'd have loved to have stopped to chat with him but wasn't able to.  I'm more than happy to point it out in person too - In fact I was called a "f***king Irish c**t" on my ride today when I pointed out to someone how they nearly ran over a pedestrian shooting through the zebra crossing that myself and a car were stopped at - that gave me a good laugh  :w00t:

Good point - if they don't care in person they may not care on the internet.

However, if my "Dear John" makes one person thinks twice then I've no problem that I posted it.  What I witnessed a few years ago has burned into my brain and I would hate anyone else to have to witness it or a family to see what I saw.

Yay for Christmas trees!

Jesus, you were called Irish???? That would definitely invoke a red mist for me

This is why talking directly to person who is behaving badly usually doesn't end well.

If somebody jumps a red light, they are probably not doing so by accident. It is likely that it was a decision, that they know is wrong, and pointing it out them will illicit the usual "attack is the best defence" reaction.

I will never forget one morning driving to work, some chop swerves/changes lanes right in front of me with no warning. I hoot at him to get his attention and proceed with a display of my hand doing an indicator signal.

The amount of road rage I received in return was second to none.

The dude pulled up next to me again and started swerving his car in and out towards mine, such was his anger.

Yes, I completely agree with you on that -  a bit cowardly indeed.

When my neighbors are having a party and getting a bit loud and late, I like to knock on their door and ask to quite down the volume (please).

When my neighbors are having a domestic dispute where it sounds like one person is being murdered I rather call upon the security company in our area to deal with it.

What happens next time someone buys a wheelset on the classifieds which turned out to be not as advertised and complains about it on the forums? Is that not essentially the same?

Why not take it up with the person he bought it from directly?

In those cases the seller gets ousted and the Hub turns into a lynch mob looking for justice.

In fairness, most of those only gets posted after an effort was made privately.

Should we say that once an effort was made to speak to someone on the side of the road doesn't go as well as hoped, then you are entitled to post on the forums about it?

A total digression from this thread...I apologise in advance.

Perhaps more of a question to mods (and I have been wanting to ask this for a while); doesn't blasphemy fall into the category of swearing / offensive language use in the community guidelines?

Apologies, did not mean to upset anyone with word choice

And that ladies and gentleman is how it is done.

Take a bow you two. And go fetch a toddy of bells on your way out the door.
