To 1x11 or to not. That's the question.

varkie2 what did you go for ?

And is it working for you ?

I have since stumbled upon this  - http://www.ritzelrechner.de/

Make sure to select the correct tire size, and then the gearing options.  I started with a KNOWN tire size and gear ratio, knowing where it works and where it hurts the rider.  It was then easy to determine what new options may or may not be suitable for the particular rider and terrain ....

Hi Chris F

I went for 1 x 11, 34 at the front and 10/42 at the back, still building it, should be done next week, waiting for the wheel build to be done.

I will probably spin out on the tar flats but im curious to see what i have on the very steep stuff.

My legs are hurting just thinking about 36 42 on a hill. That's like Niño level quads and i heard the guys workout includes 300% Squats.

I recently went 1x11 and took 30t to test and it was fine, made it like 250km before upping it to a 32t oval which feels like a nice but tough balance. You def feel it on the climbs considering that as I understand it the long side which it meant to be in the most powerful part of your Stoke is basically a 34t and the narrow is a 30t.

Its more expensive but maybe try ease in or see if a mate has a 2x with a 36t in front to take for a spin.

When I do kill my cluster I am gonna get an 11 46 instead of a 42 just to give that little more chill on a long climb, but ya by the time I get the a 50t will make me lazy again and its 4k vs R800 between a 46 and a 50t seeing as I'll need a jocket 'n Shifter.

Varkie is a mate of mine. He has got a big engine. Think American V8 instead of a little European turbodiesel. Torque for days.

I won't be surprised if he is rocking a 36 soon.

Edit: but I advised him to go for a 11-46 or 11-45 cluster with that 36t nuclear bomb of his.

I think my engine is still working up to diesel, no turbo yet.

Just a question for the experts here

What is the max/min front chain ring size you can run on a Shimano 11-46 before you have issues with chain slack/tension?

I presume you would use a long cage rear derailer?

Converting from 2x 24/34 and an 11/42 I made no adjustments to my chain for either the 30t or the 32t oval.

If your coming from a 2x anything equal or smaller than ur big ring should be fine. Maybe a limit adjustment or 2 but the clutch should keep the tension fine, did for mine.

Hi Guys. So i have 1 x 11. 34 front. 10/42 back with xd drive. I got a epic entry and there is no way ill last in a 42 gear at the back. What would you recommend i do keeping with 1x11 to keep cost down. Go down to a 32 blade. But im scare to sacrifice top end then. Or keep the 34 and go 11/46 at the back?. Ill appreciate input.

cheapest option....train harder? lol

if not...then second cheapest would be 32 or 30T up front. 46 cassette sure but you'll need a new  longer chain too....so that will be the most expensive option.

32 and 10 on a 29er will give you about 34km/h at a cadence of 100 rpm

Not sure how many fast stretches there are on the Epic.

and then the real question ... will the 42 give you enough granny for the longer hills at the end of the day .....

that 11-50 with a 34 may well be the best bet ..... though the real answer lies in YOUR legs .... no one answer fits all.

He's got XD driver, so 11-46 or 11-50 cassettes won't fit.

Possible options:

Keep 10-42 Sram cassette and fit 30t chainring. Cheapest.

9-46 E13 cassette and 32t chainring. Expensive.

Change rear hub to fit Shimano HG driver and then fit Sunrace 11-46 or 11-50 cassette plus possible changes to derailleur. Fiddly and expensive.

Cost of changing to GX Eagle 12 speed probably small change in comparison to total cost of doing Epic. Probably best option if component compatibility and support during race is taken into account.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, I have never done one, but know enough to know that doing an epic is not going to be cheap and easy.

Cheap option would also be the Sunrace drive train, M50 I think it is called. But the durability of the derailleur seems suspect
