Is it really that difficult on a SS? If it's your weapon of choice you are likely strong and used to it?

 

None of the hills are particularly steep.... But then SS riders love to say 'but I rode it on a SS' I suppose.......

Still have 3 x gears that can be relied on ... sitting, standing and walking!

The steep hills are not the issue, gears are selected for this, climbing Smits in the gale and Chappies later was a breeze. It's the descents that are trouble, and with fixie you're obviously grinding the whole way unless you stop for water...and yes, it is cool to say "I did it on a fixie"!!

I watched a bloke ascend Chappies on a SS, with a rather large front cog, and even larger calves. He was in beast-mode.

To prevent the boredom of doing or not doing my 22nd, a joined two buds on riding it single speed thank goodness I didn't go fixie like the other two. We dropped down from 2B and C to ride in 5F with the one bud doing his 1st CTCT.

 

The idea was to have lots of banter and enjoy, two of us cycled to the start did the ride, managed a 4:30 and rode home into the SE  on main road (Ouch). A most enjoyable day was had, most probably my best in the last 18 years of riding this event.

 

Riding a single speed is a mind set, once you realise you can't change into a lighter gear and have to spin like a Hamster on the flats it's "easy"

Im planning on doing it SS next year. Did a few MTB races on a SS, so much fun!

My father rode & group on a 50/17 SS

7th CTCT on an SS. Not really difficult but getting the gearing right and having the right technique is crucial.

 

Fell back to 6E and rode at a very leisurely pace with my girlfriend on her first CTCT. So the wind was not that much of an issue but sitting on a bike for that amount of time gets to you after a while. Hats off to the backmarkers.
