So.

The Cycle Tour Trust uses 364 days of the year to think through all the possibilities that have been chucked into this whinge-pot, amongst other things. It does so, continually, and has for 40-something years now (I know, it wasn't the Trust in the early days, you get what I am saying). Each and every suggestion here - even the really silly ones - has been discussed in the past, along with a whole lot Hubland hasn't even dreamt up yet. And many continue to be discussed.

The way it is right now is the most sensible and safe for all of the riders, and inconveniences the rest of Cape Town the least.

The birdies are whispering that there are some lekker new Cycle Tour things on the horizon, some that might have been broached here, some that have not, some major changes, some minor tweaks, which will address a number of the challenges the event faces.

Until then, maybe we should just trust the Trust, its collective expertise and its drive to make each event better than the last, which it has done for so long.

in your opinion its worse. That is a bad idea is not an established fact. Just because you don't like an idea doesn't make it bad.

if you don't want to contribute positively feel free to visit other threads

it is a established fact that riding never mind racing in the heat of the day is worse than in the cool early morning.

Your the 1 that asked if it should change... If you didn't want to see different opinions you should have rather asked solely for ideas on how it could be improved.

Off topic, why doesn't the DC switch the race teams to start first... every year its a nightmare shouting move left please.

What I heard is that they want to limit the time they have riders on the N2, and this is the most effective approach, especially considering that you not really "supposed" to have large bunches developing

While we at it, imagine they could have the start go up De Waal drive, I mean it is now easier given the current starting location

interesting option that eliminates the bottle necks on the New Market str / M3 onramp.

Races in Cape Town start early so that they clear the roads before the traffic builds. It has nothing do with providing superior riding conditions.

I get it, your answer is "No,nothing needs to change". Thanks for your contribution.

Thanks for sharing some insights Tim. I'm looking forward to what these new initiatives are. CTCT is a great event and it has to keep getting better if it the objective of wants to remain relevant and fulfill the objective of not just furthering the cycling culture amongst South African cyclists but all road users.

The current format is great, I even had a bit of FOMO when some of my mates went for lap 2. I really wanted to get up to the #WOWbuggieteams and lend a hand, be in the GEES.

But I can also see that the elite road race doesn't get enough exposure due to the early start - no one I spoke with was going to get up up 5am to watch cyclists flash past at 6;30-7-00 in the southern suburbs/ The ladies race is now completely obscure. Again a 6:00am start 1/4 the way down the route. This isn't good for them and it doesn't serve their sponsors.

lets face it, CTCT is no longer just a charity race. Its a commercial venture run by CTT so that it remains sustainable. Sponsors need their airtime. The racing isn't important if no one watches it.

A bit of change always brings compromise and a lot of resistance. I don't downplay the challenges that will be faced but all products need continuous improvement and renewal to remain relevant

only way i think the Argus/CTCT should change if PPA/CSA ever got around the same table and used it to put on an actual high grade UCI event in the week running up.

Tweak the Giro del Capo/TdB/ToGH format to work, with a grandstand finish on the saturday (I LOVED going to the UCI MTB WC at coetzenburg last year on the saturday).

The best time to do this is whilst DDD are around. Plenty of world tour riders not that keen on the classics, and we need to leverage the timezone/nice weather to our advantage. If this means bringing the event a week forward to the first sunday of march, then so be it.

otherwise everything works fine.

I like the concept of a ToGH merge with CTCT. If they can make it work, great.

You do realise that the classics start in the afternoon, after midday lunch right...? its not too far fetched a concept. Main Elite riders watch the fun riders going round, hub nub with the sponsors before their race, have a Nibbles and then shjoe Froooome off they go. Crowds will still be out to watch, reducing the traffic load. (lets face it part of the traffic problem on Sunday morning was all the early finishers trying to get out of town early thereby creating traffic).

those elite Pro's need to be at the Expo too. mingling with the funriders, sharing tips, doing wattage demo's, talking about their teams, the products they represent. Everything is just too removed from the topend of the sport. Somehow it all needs to be more connected

Agreed, think Asg butchered the togh/boland.

If the DC gets 250 teams, to get a team amateur road event with pro portion should be feasible!

Or perhaps a shortened route for the really fun / corporate riders...instead of heading all the way down to Simontown...just take a right at Blackhill..if the organisers time it right...it could be a lot more fun for the back markers.

We are excited to announce that in partnership with the City of Cape Town, we are finalising plans for the introduction of a short route option for Cape Town Cycle Tour 2020! Final details for this will be announced later this year.

On a separate day though...road closures both days...might enter both...maybe this is what Bellair and Co want..more revenue...????

Interesting news that. It sure is the very last thing I expected, but I'm all for it. Mainly because I think it will take a lot of the real wildebeest who ride without training or preparation out of the longer route and allow for smaller bunches and less crowding on the long route.

Anyone have the routes for the old rapport tour? How possible would it be to revive that in some form???

Looking for the route just for my own interest.
