Edge 500 - had it since they launched and its still working

Edge 510 - currently in use and no problems about 5 years old

Forerunner 920 - 3 years of everyday use and sold , new owner still using it with no problems

Forerunner 935 - 1 year old and worn everyday, running , swimming , tri and its perfect .

I do the basic firmware update when prompted to do so and thats it .

I think my point to this is that I use Garmin because they are hassle and trouble free so to the OP i think your cases are very extraordinary and sounds like there may be a contributing factor as to all your issues .

Not quite up there in terms of as many variants as the OP, but I used an Edge 305 from their launch up until a few months ago when it decided to part ways with me on a ride. No issues except for a few fancy button pushes to get it to switch on on a handful of occasions.

My wife has been using a Forerunner 35 for the past few years without any issues.

I recently got an Instinct but it's still early days so can't comment on that.

All of the units we've used have done their job.

So I had my F5x+ replaced last week and have guessed that I should no longer plug it into my PC or Mac in order to run updates. The Mac has no virus software and never gave me any trouble with the Edge units I've had. My wife's unit is also trouble free (Forerunner 230) and never an issue after plugging in.

Problem is, not plugging the device in means that some data will not find its way to my unit, not mission critical, but still.

Had ongoing issues with my 510 - first software, then started stopping/ switching off during outings. Opted to try Whahoo...

My 230 has been going strong.

Curious to now what data you think you will be missing out on?  Firmware updates can be over bluetooth as well and do not need to be done via PC.

Certain data like personal records etc. Don’t seem to pull through at all. Not via WiFi or Bluetooth

It does on my Fenix 5, If I change my lactate threshold or FTP in garmin connect it updates the unit.  Similarly I have a withings scale that syncs to garmin connect then updates weight to the unit.

As for personal records, apart from personal data i highlighted above are you referring to fastest speed, longest distances, HR etc?  As my F5 gets that info and updates my VO2 and Race Predictions from garmin connect whether am using my F5 of Edge 520.

I've been having issue with a Garmin Forerunner 235. Not syncing with the app. Garmin support over email is very unhelpful, to put it mildly.

Tech sent me a generic email, which I followed. Instead of looking at log files that I offered, they insisted that I do a manual upload of the fit files. No problem there. App log says there is an internal server error.

Then I get an email stating I should "feel free to return the device to vendor" that I bought it from. To do what? You get these one paragraph reply emails that tell you to do random things to hopefully solve the issue.

They have a long list of "rubbish service" complaints on the web. So if your Garmin works, great. If it doesn't work, good luck.

Have had my Edge 820 for a year and a half with now issues and my VivoActive 3 for three months.  Loving both devices.  Only the 820 did not want to sync with Garmin Connect on my tablet the other day but repairing fixed that.  I mainly use my Tablet for my Edge and my cellphone for my VivoActive for syncing.

not software related but my 2 year old 520 doesnt charge anymore...seems the micro usb connector has broke.

After updating my Edge 520 to the latest firmware this morning, I just can't get the thing to sync with my phone; even after re-pairing etc.

When is the last time you updated your GarminConnect?  I think that was the problem on my Android Tablet the other day.  After updating GC, all was good again.

Updated GC a couple of weeks ago.  Its on version 4.15.1.2, and is working fine on my Forerunner.  Its just with the Edge that it won't sync.

I'll see if I can find an update for GC after loadshedding…

My edge 520 has worked no problem for 5 years now......................what is the lifespan?

Depends who you ask! Difficult to determine life span on an item unless you know the usage cycles. If anything on these units the battery or side buttons will *** first.
