Sram Eagle NX rant & rave

After having mine for a while I'd say it works as well as SLX. No hassles but have noticed the chain does rust up pretty quick after a wash down. I do dry and lube but that surface rust is there and not going any where.

Agreed, I also noticed the rust on my chain. Will replace with a better one when the time comes.

I had an upper pulley wheel fall out / off on GX Eagle with less than 2,500kms/5 months on it, and with no warning.

Groupset installed and serviced by lbs, no home maintenance or fiddling at all (apart from cleaning).  Chain replaced regularly by lbs, so not stretched or worn.

SRAM replaced entire derailleur under warranty - i only had to pay courier costs.

GX has two lengths bolts, I think the longer one goes top. So if they installed the wrong one there and put the plate wrong then there will not be enough thread to hold bolt in.

Derailleur comes pre-assembled out the box, surely?

Entire mech went to SRAM and they replaced immediately ("repaired", in their words) - sounds like a manufacturing / design fault to me...

It's not like S-African distributors are known for their customer service or willingness to uphold warranties.

Do you know for sure that the LBS never removed the pulley's to clean it?

Another issue I’ve been having, is that it does not shift into the 42t from the 50t. It comes from the LBS working perfectly until a few rides in. I’ve tried readjusting the cable tension and resetting all 3 limit screws. Checked the hanger. Lubed the pivots. Then I tried a new cable. When I opened up the shifter, I noticed that the outer part of the coiled wire is not attached to anything. Therefore, not enough spring to pull the cable back when it’s released.

(Not actual photo of my shifter, but the way it should be hooked)

Same issue was found here, and derailleur was just replaced. https://www.reddit.com/r/bikewrench/comments/bgbn6z/sram_nx_eagle_stuck_on_50t/#thing_t1_eljs7nc

I have already done a warranty replacement. So I just gave up and now I have a second hand XO1 shifter & derailleur working perfectly.

I know of 2 other separate incidents where the rear mech just failed on the NX range.

The one guy had a warranty replacement done 3 times and finally just chucked the brand. The NX feels cheap and doesn't give me confidence that it'll last.

yea one gets the feeling that they've had it a bit easy with shimano dropping the ball and lagging behind all this time. That will change with the new shimano stuff though. Slx 1x12 is here so GX eagle already has a headache...once Deore 1x12 hits it will be tough to compete value wise imo. Shimano's stuff seems a bit more 'polished' like for like- especially in the value categories, and they are generally anything BUT unreliable.

SRAM just don't want warranty hassles. So every warranty claim is looked at from the point of view of we will replace and escalate to SRAM.

SRAM globally wants to capture any in the field related failure and validate it aainst similar claims to check for any production issues. The distributors willingness to replace broken parts should not be seen as an admission of guilt wrt to design faults. Its just SRAM globally want to make sure they are capturing all possible failures

Just my luck -  days after spending about 5K+ to overhaul my whole drivetrain to make it an Eagle NX this thread pops up  :cursing:

I really hope this is an isolated issue...

Oh the irony of seeing this post now..

So after 3 months and 1,5k km's on the NX drivetrain my derailleur just disintegrated while riding downhill on (to be fair a viciously) corrugated district road. It's possible that there might have been some earlier damage as a few days prior I did a race through very rocky terrain and my bike took some potshots from rocks jumping in front of me...

But still, disappointing. So add me to the list of people who had NX derailleurs fail on them.

Hummm. Now I'm a bit worried. I do check the bolts when I wash / clean my bike and not had a single issue yet. Let's see what happens over the next couple of months.

Edit: also had the rusty chain issue as well despite keeping well dried and lubed.
