Yes, the Eselfontein 3 day stage race. Its got it all - sand, rocks and  mostly single track. Its also the cheapest 3 day race in SA if not the world.

True. I should have mentioned this one myself. It had some proper challenging sections. Did it last year. There was a short climb up a bunch of rocks that was loads of fun. And yes, as the speed picks up on the downhill sections things do get interesting.

Swazi Frontier - although I haven't done it myself I have heard from others who I respect as good enduro riders who say it's nice and technical.

I have done lots of Swazi's. Good fun riding and hard work because of all the climbing, some awesome descents, but not as technical as say the Pofadder at van Gaalens.

Put away all genitalia and stop measuring to compare. Anyone can dump a pile of rocks and call it the most technical mtb race around. Yawn it would also be a crap race. If You want a real challenge, create a route with the right balance of technical downhills whilst keeping the flow and views and making an incredibly enjoyable ride and most memorable route. A route that you say man that was just perfect, not man that was the most technical.

Waste of time- Ya it is the most tech race, we walked half and enjoyed none of it but it was the most technical.

Where can you enter this race?

the question was not what is the best or most enjoyable race, because everyone's definition of "best" is different.

It was most technical. (although once again this definition of technical varies from person to person)

I like technical races rides, where most would get off and walk the descents, I wanna ride down. Climbing tricky sections also offers a sense of achievement. so in my mind, technical is better.

I have made peace with afkak being part of MTB riding for me, so I try and train to reduce the duration of the afkak by training.

Just go do a national or regional champs XCO race.

They usually have it all, and you get to practise on the day before then do repeats of all the fun sections.

Invariably there are a few nice “technical sections”

Rinse and repeat

looks like you are also whipping yours out for a measure?

I have been wondering, Do we have a proper technical mountain bike race in SA? I don't mean enduro, which we obviously do have and they are loads of fun, but rather a one day or multi day race that has some seriously technical terrain as the main feature?

I've done the Piket-bo-berg race, which was fun and had tons of single track, but it wasn't all that technical. Origin of Trails is probably the closest thing I can think of in terms of a more technically challenging race. Is there anything else out there that is on par or maybe more challenging?

I found The U tougher than the Piket-bo-berg race. The distances are a bit shorter, but it covers different parts of the mountain. It is not technical in the sense that you cannot ride everything, it is just relentlessly technical, which affects your body and concentration. Very easy to make a mistake and very few soft places to land.

Very true. I often ride sections of that World Champs XCO route above Coetzenberg and the A-line rockgarden is pretty tricky. Love the barrel run as well, although it is not as much tricky as mind over matter daunting.

This part in bold!

When did it become "uncool" to have to get off and walk a tech section ... back in the early days of MTB this was never an issue!
