Garmin versus Huawei

BTW I have a P30 Pro and it is hands down the best phone I've ever had. The google thing is bloody annoying though; if it sticks and can't be resolved, consumer protection laws here mean a full refund. But I don't want to go that route...let's see what happens...

I read an article that explains that Force Majeure unfortunately means it (the consumer law) might not protect people in this instance locally. The main argument they will bring forward is that there was no reasonable way any of the local networks could have predicted these extraordinary circumstances to play out. It was/is totally out of their hands and gives them the lifeline they will fight for instead of refunding a million phones and losing a crapload of money lol

We all know how 'competent' local companies can choose to become if they are faced with things like this unfortunately.

If I had a brand new Huawei now, id take it back asap while i have some OTHER leg to stand on re consumer law etc. Tell them you changed your mind or don't like the ergonomics or cant say the name right or something ^_^

There is no guarantee of a refund if this escalates imo.

Sounds like there's a 3 month postponement right now.  Might be enough to move from GApps to FDroid or something.

Or switch to Google Ireland like they do with taxes.

Wonder what other Chinese manufacturers will do now...  Might just break Google's Android monopoly.

Anyway, wrong forum.

Got the P30 recently, also had syncing problems but found that Garmin connect must be open, then it syncs to Strava as well.

If it makes anyone feel better, I've got a similar problem on a Google Nexus phone.  It's not limited to Huawei.  The Garmin 520 usually doesn't sync automatically.

I think Google is cutting its nose to spite its face......and if I read how fast Huawei has grown in the past few years and how many phones they have sold, then I think perhaps it may well hurt Google more. Nobody is too big for that. The tech world is littered with the wrecks of former giants.

Yeah it's their battery management, which kills any app running (that's chowing battery life) .

I have the p10 and it syncs all the time i must just ensure I've ignored Garmin Connect as automatically manage and then the app needs to be running in the background

They're being ordered to do it by a "National Emergency."  They have no choice.  It's like sanctions.

My P30 Pro has been absolutely flawless connecting to both my Garmin devices, no hassles whatsoever - have had it about 3 weeks I think.

Also just got a Huawei Watch GT which came as a sweetener for buying a P30 Pro. It's a very impressive bit of kit, but I don't really have a need for it. It's not my Fenix 5s, in other words...although in some respects it is better. HR matches to my Fenix, and so do the steps, so there is that.

wife got the

p30 lite last week. camera is mindblowingly insane for the price.

bit worrying now, though. wonder if CPA 7 days return can still cut it?

Why? Sanctions have been imposed on Huawei in the US. It is for all new models yet to be introduced, not existing models.

It just means that they will have to develop their own o/s. They will not be allowed to use Google on their future models, which isn't to much of a biggie since the Chinese models are already not allowed Google due to censorship laws

Revenue from android is a tiny part of Google’s overall income

^this. They have no say, and apparently also stand to lose a lot of money due to data acquisition from chrome and maps alone.

anyway. OT

but what about the add revenue when you are on the Google platforms ?

Opening the market for a new competitor may well be "interesting" ....

On the one hand it is already a reality that some apps are only for Android OR OS .... do we really want the market split three ways ?

On the other hand Google has abused its position of power for years, and some real competition may be a good thing .....

Interesting times ahead

My 520 used to sync almost instantly with my Samsung A3 without having to start Garmin connect. The Huawei P30 seems to be constantly monitoring power usage and gives me plenty alerts about Whattsapp using excessive power when updating. I must say despite this it's a great device.

I know, a Trump manufactured national emergency. And methinks it will hurt more at home than in China.

It may well allow Huawei to introduce their own operating system wider than in China itself. What they have done this far as a tech company is impressive and who knows where it may take them? Perhaps that is what Trump wants to prevent as part of his trade war? The quotes below put it into perspective.

"Huawei cell phone sales

In the first quarter of 2019 it shipped 59.9 million smartphones, according to analysis firm IDC – selling an average of more than 660,000 phones every day. That represented year-on-year growth of more than 50%, and gave Huawei a real chance of overtaking Samsung as the world's biggest cellphone company."

"Cellphone Exports by Country

Below are the 15 countries that sold the most mobile phones on international markets during 2018.

China: US$141.7 billion (50.1% of exported mobile phones)

Hong Kong: $31.4 billion (11.1%)

Vietnam: $30.1 billion (10.6%)

Netherlands: $19.1 billion (6.7%)

United States: $10.5 billion (3.7%)

Czech Republic: $6.5 billion (2.3%)

South Korea: $6.1 billion (2.2%)

Germany: $5.3 billion (1.9%)

Austria: $4.8 billion (1.7%)

Singapore: $4.7 billion (1.6%)

Slovakia: $4.7 billion (1.6%)

Sweden: $2.1 billion (0.7%)

Thailand: $1.9 billion (0.7%)

Italy: $1.8 billion (0.6%)

United Kingdom: $1.3 billion (0.4%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 96% of global cellphone exports in 2018 by value.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing mobile phones exporters since 2014 were: Thailand (up 267.7%), Czech Republic (up 126.1%), Italy (up 102.4%) and Hong Kong (up 44.9%).

Four top exporters posted declines in their mobile phones sales namely: United Kingdom (down -55.1%), South Korea (down -51%), United States (down -6.1%) and Germany (down -3.8%)."
