Ratio help on 1x12 needed

I have a TruVativ Descendent 6k Eagle Dub, Boost crank with 30 tooth. Back i have SRAM NX Eagle, 11x50.

My previous rig had a 1x11 with a xt setup and 11x46 in the back and a 34 oval front. Which i was planing to up to 36 as on gravel and some st i would run out of gear.

Im planning on changing the 30 in the front and am not sure if 36 oval is to big or 34 oval will be to small again as it was on my xt 1x11.

Or of it will be fine as i have the 50 in the back

Second part of the question, its a TruVativ Descendent 6k Eagle Dub, Boost crank, so i then should be direct mount with 3mm offset?

You'll have to check if 36 oval can fit your frame without touching the chain stays. As for the gearing only you can decide whether it suits your ability and/or riding terrain.

If my math is correct...

34-46 is a 1:0.74 ratio

36-50 is a 1:0.72 ratio, which is slightly easier than 34-46. But like bullet77 said, chainstay clearance could be a bigger issue.

Is it a boost bike or std chain line.

Keep the same size and oval if that's what you prefer. Not sure why you geared down to a 30 if you were using a 34 all along?

New bike and yes boost

What does that mean chain stay clearances?

When you put a 36 oval on the crank the chainring might rub the frame/chainstay.

What bike is it?

On each frame the clearance between the front ring and the "frame" differes just a bit .. and this determines the largest ring that could be used.  NOTE - with an oval ring you need to check the "wide" side for clearance ...

edit - the arrow did not come out clearly ...

Use this website and have a look at your current set-up versus what you're looking to get:

My gut feel tells me that the 36T in the front may be just too big and I would stick with the 34T in the front. If I change the 30T on the link with a 34T the max ratio moves from 2.99 over to 3.39 whilst the min ratio goes from 0.66 to 0.74. Now that's not too bad on both ends

I just can’t help wonder if 2x and 3x systems would not resolve these problems....

I LOVE my 1x .... the 10-50 cogg certainly gives me more than enough range.

On the commuter I still have a 3x setup (though I only use it as a 2x).  In theory I can get smaller jumps if I use front and rear in the correct combinations .... this morning I was faffing with the gears and again realised just HOW nice a 1x system is !!

The single biggest problem being that people dont select the correct ring in front ....

That said, for the serious racers .... I fully understand why they select different front rings based on the race route profile .... in which case a 2x may just be more "versatile" ....

sorry, am I agreeing with you now ?

Don’t be sorry ????

Ja look im a recent 1x convert ( not sure that’s the right word as there was no other option)

So far it’s lekker, simplicity rules

Only problem I’ve experienced is automatically thumbing the dropper post lever thinking it was my front derailer lever... purely out of habit

The shock of dropping a few inches unexpectedly should cure that issue

I could just imagine your face when the seat suddenly drops???????? its like me trying to trap the clutch in the auto. Some things just take time to get use to ????
