94.7 Race with what bike?

as mentioned before, if you don't already have a road bike you might battle with the low gearing on the hills,

pump your tires to 4 bar, &  with the extra weight you will cruise down the hills and you will defiantly climb better with the gearing you already know and are used too

4 bar might exceed the limit of the mtb tyres.

if your bike is a 29er you can get a set of cheap wheels and put road tyres on it. Better even than MTB slicks but you'll need an extra cassette and rotors (but you don't need to worry about redoing the tubeless on your MTB wheels when changing between slicks and knobblies).

It might be better getting a second hand road bike though. Since you use the IDT alot, this might also be good as you can keep the roadbike on the IDT as a "permanent" trainer which you can use in road races as well.

I've done it on my soft tail with normal tubbies (terrible) and then soft tail with slicks (was much better). I considered getting a cheap road bike but went the slicks route and it was perfect.

As others have said - got have fun and don't try race.

I do it every year on my dual sus MTB. Last year I changed to slicks. The tyres doesn't make a huge difference. I think that the gearing on a 1x12 MTB is not lekker for a road race.

My first 94.7 was on a hard tail .I pumped my maxxis cross marks to 3 bar .I had a 2 x 10 XT group set with the larger sprocket [40] on .I was very fit  and embarrassed numerous roadies that year .I started in MM as a noob and passed many cyclists on and off road .Now i am in the Lycra shaven head serious groups .I think this year is the year for a single speed 94.7

dunno, you're used to the MTB and riding position.

Maybe try sort the gearing out for the top end stuff and please stick a set of slicks on it, that friggin wrrrrrr wrrrrrr wrrrrr sound from knobblies on tar drives me crazy.

Sooooo you wouldn't like me and my buddies.  We've always ridden it on our fattys

What ratio are you going for?

I love that sound

Usually means a stong rider sitting with us roadies

I'm far from a strong rider, I'll admit to sucking the wheel of a MTB or 2 at these longer rides.

Doesnt make the sound any less irritating (to me)

I think we have identified the problem..

Short and long:

You can do it on a MTB, no problem.

On a Road bike you will definitely go much quicker for the same amount of effort.

Whether the juice is worth the squeeze is your call. Everybody is allowed to spend their hard earned money on what they find value in. If you buy the road bike 2nd hand you will recover a significant amount of your money if you do decide to give it up again in the future.

I love my Road Bike.

I love my Dual Suspension 29er.

Each one is exceptional on it's home turf.

Hi guys, i want to get some inputs.....

Im an avid mountain biker, riding on most weekends and the odd race here and there. I entered the 94.7 for a charity event so now i want to know.

Do i use my hardtail with slicks or get a cheap road bike for the event.

Why will a road bike be better than a hardtail with slicks? Is it because the roady is lighter and more power on hills?

Any experience from people who did the 94.7 before?

Use your mtb.  I did the Argus with mine (twice).

3,5 on WTB Rims and you will be picking sealant off after the explosion.

I love these closed road rides ( note rides ) and treat it as a good day out.

I use my commuter , a 1x10 hard tail mtb , carbon fork with  same saddle and grips as my MTB and low rolling resistance tyres.

A great day out and good time in saddle for stage races

Awesome way to see the city , even if you just do it even as a base to buy a Road bike.

I have done it on a road bike but mid field , it sat out 2 947's and arguses and was than sold

Each to their own , Just Ride ;-)
