Hi all,

Not my usual area, so I'm a bit unsure of the safety around the deep south. Planning on a circular route from kommetjie to Cape Point and back via misty cliffs. (M65) Any issues regarding safety along this route?

Thanks!

Don't ride up the Oceanview road solo, there have been incidents going past the back of Oceanview.

Rather go over Slangkop lighthouse road.

This is the area you should avoid:

Thanks for the reply! So turn left off M65 onto lighthouse Road or stay on M65 into kommetjie and avoid the right turn that goes behind ocean View?

Out of interest, how is the main road out of kommetjie towards fish hoek?

The main road from kommetjie is pretty crap, especially past the township. There have been incidents there too, not just on the ocean view road. It's only a few minutes riding but you'd need to be vigilant. Past the lights after the township it's fine, just roadworks to be aware of. Ride inside the cones if you can otherwise a taxi might take you out.

I've been avoiding that stretch for a while.

If going from kommetjie, go first around cape point via lighthouse then go to Simonstown and back via red hill. That way you miss ocean view completely. You can go further down the coast to muizenberg for coffee and back via red Hill too.

Increasingly my feeling is there is risk everywhere. Some areas like ocean view and the drag past masi are more risky for sure but any spot any time is a thought that often pops into my mind.

I used to do my repeats from fish hoek up Red Hill to the top and back down and the a final blast around Cape Point Scarbs and through Masi as fast as you can back to Fish Hoek

Ocean View is the blink of an eye

Soet Water I would avoid

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I think I may rethink Friday's ride and start in noordhoek and ride mtb to tokai or something...

As per Shebeen's post, stick with your road ride around the point, just be vigilant.

If at all possible, hook up with another rider or 2.

My other half and I ride the Southern Peninsula all the time. Touch wood no problems. Red Hill. Black Hill. Ocean view. Kommetjie. All of it. There's no shortage of riders on the roads.

Try to clear Massi early coz it's mayhem with the Taxi's, kids, dogs, randoms everywhere. The road works are a nightmare so we try to work our way behind the one mall and through the burbs. Also try to clear the top of chappies before 9 coz that's when the buses come.

If you're stressed about safety do an out and back to Smits along the coast. As always. Safety in numbers. But if you look at the number of riders vs incidents you're probably more likely to get mugged in the parking at cavendish.

Last week one of the guys I know was bike jacked on the piece of road between Red Hill and Cape Point.  The same guy was bike jacked about a year ago outside Ocean View.

In the big scheme of things, with the amount of cyclists out there all the time the odds of it happening are very low, but there is still an odd.
