Safety around kommetjie and misty cliffs.

Last week one of the guys I know was bike jacked on the piece of road between Red Hill and Cape Point.  The same guy was bike jacked about a year ago outside Ocean View.

In the big scheme of things, with the amount of cyclists out there all the time the odds of it happening are very low, but there is still an odd.

Wow, twice! How often does he do that route?

Crime comes in waves as well I feel, like now they are policing the bikelane into Cape Town the element will move off elsewhere and target other places.

My other half and I ride the Southern Peninsula all the time. Touch wood no problems. Red Hill. Black Hill. Ocean view. Kommetjie. All of it. There's no shortage of riders on the roads.

Try to clear Massi early coz it's mayhem with the Taxi's, kids, dogs, randoms everywhere. The road works are a nightmare so we try to work our way behind the one mall and through the burbs. Also try to clear the top of chappies before 9 coz that's when the buses come.

If you're stressed about safety do an out and back to Smits along the coast. As always. Safety in numbers. But if you look at the number of riders vs incidents you're probably more likely to get mugged in the parking at cavendish.

Never thought of going through the burbs, how far along do you come out from the burbs on the ocean view road?

Well, he lives in Scarbs, so every time he goes out for a ride...

The first time past OV, guys ran out from the bushes - this was happening a fair amount around there at the time and hasn't been an issue for a while now.

This time it was a car driving past - they went past him very slowly then drove up the road and two guys got out who then attacked him.  So the location of that could really have been anywhere, but that piece of road is pretty quiet so I guess its a "good" spot for it.

Legitimately now, how many of these bike jackings actual bike jackings? I mean, I only recall seeing a handful that has made the local paper, cape times and argus. Some been posted here on the hub. I know some guys would claim something like this for insurance so that they can get a payout.

Also the reason I ask is cause I have cycled past these areas on numerous occasions alone early on a sunday morning and have never come across any would be mugging/jacking.

Well the guy i know who was jacked twice was 100% legitimate.  And he got beaten up pretty badly this time as he put up a fight because it was happening to him again.

&*%it  thats &*%up, and a tough one to experience I am sure. I have been mugged(not bike) a few times, never been beaten up.

good question: how does one get the actual crimestats from a certain area? Can one ask the local police station directly or via a PAIA request (public access to information act)?

Coming past Massi you turn in at the next traffic light. You wiggle your way through the burb. there's a tiny little bit of greenbelt between Faerie Know and Milkwood park but it's like 20m. Then you head though the burb and pop out on Sunnydale. Then round the back of the old mall and you pop out on Noordhoek Main.

It's slower but those roadworks really suck right now.

FWIW we do the same when going through Fishhoek. We aren't fans of the bible belt so we roll through the burbs parallel to Kommetjie road. But pinners like you guys probably wouldn't bother with that.

A mate and I were doing part of the Cycle Tour route and we we took the right turn into Slanghoek Rd we saw two cyclists up ahead. We caught up to them and told them we'd ride together through past OV and Masi... Turns out they were British Tourists who come out every few years and hire bikes to cycle the Peninsula... I then had to explain why bikes get stolen and what happens to a stolen bike etc....

Haha.

At the traffic light you go left into Palm

Follow Palm. Right into Juniper.

Little greenbelt out front

Right into Bordeax

Right into Longboat

Left into Sunnydale.

The highlighted bit in red is the greenbelt. Just ride slowly through there. I don't want you guys stealing my KOMS!!!

You're relying on all incidents being reported there!

modern tech should make this database a valuable tool. Sure the crims have got access to it too, but i don't think that changes their thinking

4 incidents in Ocean view area only!

Friend of mine was mugged while running up the Oceanview road. She went down to the Oceanview police station to report it and was told not to bother unless she wanted to claim from insurance. Given their total lack of empathy or interest (and her watch not being insured) she left without reporting it.

- in hindsight she agreed that she should've reported it regardless, but I totally understand why she didn't given her experience.

Oceanview police station probably doesn't want these incidents reported as it just highlights how ineffectual they are.
