Those Maxxis Icon tyres with white writing that come with new Meridas and Scotts and other brands are super *** tyres that are only good for hangind up in your garage or selling on the hub. They got no protection whatsoever and a small piece of glass or a baby thorn will puncture them easily. OEM Tyres they are called 60 TPI . (They are not even good for running tubes never mind tubeless). Serious Bike Shops usually throw them out when you buy a new bike.

Last year Kyalami Cycle Tech was selling them for 100 bucks each.

Fyi the tpi rating has nothing to o do with tubeless. There are tubeless tyres with tpi rating from 60 to 200 plus. Just denotes the amount of threads per inch of the fabric in the casing. Generally the lower the tougher it is, the higher the more supple.

some sharp words there .....

My bike came with MAXXIS FORCASTER ..... bike shop recommended the MAXXIS ICON, which I did NOT take at the time.

Spoke to my local bike workshop, they also recommend the MAXXIS ICON.

Also saw lots of these at two other bike shops ....

CONTEXT - they both know I do "trails" and the odd section of tar to get to the trails.   They also know I am not a racing snake.

Icons are great for going fast on gravel roads. But the forekasters are better for grip. However in SA the forekasters aren't available in the tougher EXO casing, whereas the Icons are. So the shops were probably recommending tyres with better casings, but with less grip.

But there are few shops where the owners or employees don't have a marathon bedonnerd viewpoint.

I had the Ikon's with white writing on my HT from buying brand new and they lasted about 2000km's with a tubeless conversation"and the tread eventually wore out. The only issue i had was that they slowly sweat sealant from the side walls but nothing a top up every 3-4 rides didn't sort out. I found as a entry level tyre on new bikes they actually perform pretty well.

Hi. I have been riding with the white branded Maxxis IKON tyres tubeless for a couple of rides now. With all the washed out jeep tracks in Tokai and Table Mountain after the rains the tyres have served me extremy well. Smooth trails at the wine farms they proven fantastic. I found when pumped to hard they don't grip. I weigh 84kg with the back pumped 1.8bar and Front 1.6bar I have so much grip on this setup. Very impressed. I had lots of side scrapes with the sharp exposed rocks with no issues. I'll ride these till I get problems if any. Thanks for all the positive input... Happy with STD new bike tyres

I bought a new hard tail that came with a set of non tubeless Maxxis Icon 2.20 tyres which they are honestly quite crappy but I wanted to see just how far I could ride with them. I did a tubeless set up and off I went. To cut a long story sort I did 7500km mainly gravel riding which included a few races, they are horrendous for technical type riding but for XC type riding they work well I did get the odd hole here and there but nothing that a plug and a bomb couldn't sort out. A friend of mine gave me another set that came of he's brand new bike and I've already installed them... ready for round two.

Good luck!

Just keep the sidewalls away from anything remotely stabby.

Way back when I used to run Kenda Karma's (Thanks Burry) that were non tubeless as tubeless. Slashed both front and rear sidewalls at Babbas Lodge MTB race on the only descent 😂

Never messed with non tubeless tires again

IKONS are  My Favourite Tyres and I usually get +- 6000 Km out of them.

WoW you beat my record but maybe You Rotated and i don't.

I actually Find them Quite Good on Light to Medium Technical Riding on MUD they not so good.

@dasilvarsa I did rotate them, I quite like Icon's too when I eventually buy a set I'll opt for a 2.3 for the front and 2.25 for the rear i find 2.2 just a little too narrow.

Ikon only comes in the 2.20 and the 2.35, no 2.25 option available
