My Giro Cylinders are both pulling apart at the same place after one year of use. At the corners of the material pieces close to the toes. Was looking at the Giro privateers for around R1800. They don't have that material pieces of the Cilinders, so that's a plus, but I'm going to miss the Boa. Going to follow this topic to see what else I have to consider...

Would say about middle of the pack, maybe trying to buy some speed/efficiency

If absolute speed is the goal, carbon soles are the better alternative due to best power transfer. Cycling is about marginal gains and carbon soles will give you gains, albeit marginal.

Comfort is important too, and the right sized and fitting show is as important. Top end shoes tend to weigh less and are constructed better and just so plush.Again a marginal gain but they all add up.

When I moved to carbon soles I felt an improvement and on road I now only use carbon soles, on my MTB which is more recreational leisure I use mid range shoes as itsnot important to be fast.

Top end shoes are expensive but tend to last a long long time thus relatively cheap.

Will definitely be between BOA and laces

All the nice lace options seem to be Giro, but I also like the BOA options from Shimano and Specialized

Spez shoes are the business for comfort and longevity...expert (ZAR3.5k) or s-works (very $$$).

ESPECIALLY if you have wide feet.

Carbon shoes definitely make a differnce, more expensive carbon shoes even better.

I went from shimano R171 to shimano RC901 and immeditaley felt a difference. The BOA is also great to have, i'd take BOA over laces anyday.

Shoes I Currently use

Fizik R3B my go to anyday not for wide feet though toe box very narrow so on a long ride you might feel it.

Spez Sworks 6 heelcup to tight for liking

Fortunate to been able to replace them with Sworks Exos Best ever shoe I have to date ito comfort stiffness and the looks.

I have a set of Privateers and I just love them... great value for money.

Like Spidey. I also have a shoe fetish...

I have a pair of

R6000 older Gaerne road shoes

R2000 older Spez road shoes (Competition)

R2550 brand new Spez Torch 2.0 road shoes

R2200 brand new set of Bontrager Circuit shoes

All BOA.  New BOA systems are much better.

I just retired an older set of Suplest road shoes (R1500 at the time) - ratchet system.

The best - The Suplest by FAR!! Reason, most comfortable shoe that hugged your feet!! No loss in power transfer.

I can't notice the difference between the plastic and carbon soles from a power transfer perspective.  For those with power meters - run us an experiment please.

Zorro, the shoes you have are pretty good and comfy if your feet fit in them. The higher end giro shoes main benefits are

lighter weight

softer uppers

boa dials that allow better foot retention.

The weight benefit will definitely aid performance. It's an easy way to strip 300gr off the bike without sacrificing comfort (assuming you are considering other options from Giro)

I’ve got some fancy S-Works road shoes. When buying them I thought best of the best. What I got was best performance but at a huge sacrifice for the things at my level of cycling are way more important. Without doubt the hardest shoes to put on in the world! I think it’s easier to get a sweaty foot into a hot gumboot. Mainly due to the design which “cups” your heel. Sure, they are sublime when pedaling a good stroke. Comfort is ok but there is not a millimeter of extra material or padding anywhere for comfort.

I’m not knocking the shoe, it was purpose built. Unfortunately I missed the purpose. The model down from them would have been a MUCH better buy for me.

About 2 months before Tankwa this year my old S-Works shoes started tearing ( after about 3 years of proper use ) .

I had a look at the prices , and decided to rather go for the cheaper ( non carbon sole ) version .

The shoes felt fine and did their job , but don't know if it was the terrain of the 2 days prior, or just because the decent after Merino climb is so long , I started feeling that my feet were getting sore on that decent . It started feeling as if the cleats were "pushing" through the soles and like I was almost riding without shoes with my feet on the pedals alone . It got so bad that I had to sit down on my saddle on some sections were I should have been out of the saddle just to give my feet a break .

Got back from Tankwa and went and bought the new S-works shoes .

Koop een keer en koop reg !

Shoes and a saddle are 2 places you don't skimp if you plan on doing long technical rides .

This is the problem with buying top of the range. Once you go there and you’ve tasted it, it’s nigh on impossible to go a step down again.

Got me a pair of S-Works and they were great. At least for the first month, then they started impinging on an odd ankle spur bone and then the agony began. They felt fine in the store when I tried them on, but schools fees are happening.

I am able to get some clearance stock of the Specialized S-Works 6 shoes.  Just tricky ordering without trying on.  Reviews look good

Anyone know if these shoes run narrow/small?  Can't get along with narrow shoes like Sidi

I have some older (think 2015) Spez Pro XC shoes, so I hope these fit about the same

LG and Giro shoes have also been fine for me, but normal Sidi's crush my small toe
