Replace rivnut

Anyone ever had a rivnut replaced? And where (in Jhb)?

I fear I've screwed one up beyond repair (bottle cage mount) and probably best to replace.

It's still well connected to the frame but the internal bit is fubar with the sheared off bottle cage screw still in there after trying to remove it with an easy-out. MF'er just wont come out.

Haven't tried to run a tap through it yet and not sure it will work. Would rather replace the thing if possible.

Any guidance form someone whose done this before, and where, greatly appreciated!

Best to pop the old one off.  Use a dremel or something to pop off the head and then pop the rest into the frame.  You can get it out via the BB.  Rivnut replacement will cost you R10 max and a simple nut and bolt will do to put the new one on.  Or use a skewer like Martin PJ suggested.

If you can drill it out, then you can replace. You can make a rivet gun using a front hub and skewer, the skewer has the same thread as the rivnut (usually).

 cool! I'm just not going to try and do that myself.

I'd rather take it to a shop that's done it before than a shop "giving it a bash".

Or is this a simple thing bike shops do all the time and I'm overthinking it?

Your LBS can do it.  But it really is a simple thing to do yourself.

I have a loose one on my frame which is very irritating. I got the riv-nuts but the tool is really expensive, and not something I plan on using much of.

How secure can one install it with a "nut and bolt" method? I tried this to tighten the existing one up, but It works its way loose after a few rides.

It's likely you didn't tighten it enough.  I'll never had a problem with a rivnut working it's way loose after I've put it in.

best method I know uses an old hub (or a QR adapter if you have such a thing), and a quick release lever. I've got some pictures somewhere which I'll add if i find them.

Basically take the nut off of the QR axle - this is your new rivnut tool.

Then holding the hub as a "handle", thread the QR through said hub and screw the protruding thread into rivnut.

Use the QR lever to tighten rivnut.

You will not get satisfactory results just trying to crank up the waterbottle bolts.

Well the old one that worked its way loose the first time around, just worked its way loose again. I havent put a new one in because I havent had the tool, hence my question.  The problem with the tightening, theres no way to tell if youre busy screwing up the nut (over-tightening). a spanner has much more leverage than a 3mm alankey.  But I will try.

A - screw this in to rivnut in frame

B - use this to tighten up

Makes sense this.. Might have to increase the size of the lever? Use a pipe or something over it.

Nice tip, thanks.
