Two questions:

1.Does CRC have a physical store?

2. Does anyone know what their price is on a 105/Ultegra or Sram equivalent hydro group?

Might be in the UK soon.

Will appreciate the help. If there are other stores I can consider, please chime in.

Thanks!

Check a few stores but if you're in the UK then CRC is still a great option. Their local shipping is still good but the new guys doing delivery to SA are creating a nightmare for everyone (that said I had no issues with a SRAM groupset getting here in about 10 days).

They do have a central store in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This is also where their warehouse is. head office is now in Portsmouth since the merger with Wiggle don't think they have a retail option there though.

Use Evans.

They have a "click and collect" scheme where you can order online and arrange to collect from one of their stores.

They also have a price match guarantee so if you show them that CRC (or any other) have it cheaper they will give you that price.

Oh, you can also get your UK VAT back which cannot be done if any store mails it too you...

Rather use Merlin  cycles and just order when you're there. Local chipping is free and fast.

Thank you! Good deals there...

Thanks guys for the valuable feedback. Can anyone also recommend a good "walk-in" store in the greater London area? Looking to buy riding apparel and better to try out stuff like this first...

They don't charge you VAT if the items are mailed to you. So there is no difference really

If you collect in UK and bring to SA, you get charged UK VAT, but can claim it back.

If they mail to you, they don't charge VAT, so your cost will still be the same.

To the OP, remember SA VAT is still levied when the goods enter SA.

I suspect he meant getting it mailed to you while in the UK. If it’s delivered to a UK address you’ll be charged UK VAT. If it’s delivered to SA then no UK VAT but you’ll be charged SA VAT at customs.

Best option is to collect in store in the UK, claim the VAT back on exit from the UK, and don’t declare on entry to SA (yes, I know it’s wrong, so if fraud and corruption. Put the high horse back in the stable).

If it's anything like our system in SA (which I suspect it is), if it is mailed to him in the UK, he can still get the VAT back as long as the invoice is in his name and he takes the goods out of the UK himself.

As I said, that is how our VAT system works. I'm not sure UK is the same, but their system in all other aspects is similar to ours.

NO !!!!

If they mail it to an address in the UK, they charge VAT and as they can't see your passport to issue the VAT refund form, you CANNOT claim it back. You will pay VAT in the UK.

the on-line options are plentiful....from wiggle to chain-reaction etc...just go on-line and they will be there..as with the on-line options...its always waiting for a courier for delivery...

Evans has a very good presence with physical shops etc...the shops tend to sell the higher end of gear as well..

Other options are Cycle republic(centre) and Halfords(mostly out of town) but Giant have a standalone shop by St-Pauls...its a lovely modern spacious shop...and can order anything you want...

there are small independent shops as well...don't forget a phone and tube ride and you are there...

Dont forget Decathlon( based in Surrey Quays)...it offers a great selection of everything sports and cycling is brilliant there for clothing etc...and if you want clothing specifically its holds a very good range and better value than most places..and it also has a work shop..its my first place of call for value..

hope this helps...

Surely you can go to the Customs office at the Airport on the way out and present your passport, invoice and the goods and claim the VAT back there?

That's how it has worked in every country I've tried to claim VAT back in...

True, but one will get charged it in the first place.
