looking to ride a complete new system, already looked into the geared hub. any other suggestions?

If you are in the market for a new frame you can look at Zerode. They have gearboxes incorporated in their frames. A bit heavy, but by all accounts pretty good. Probably the future of drivetrains...

I wouldn't mind swinging a leg over one of these: https://zerodebikes.com/katipo

maybe because its only 9speed with a 444% range. Thatsnot going to worry SRAM Eagle or Shimano.

Lekker thing about gearboxes is the BB is integrated and the bearings lubricated by the gearbox oil so it will last very very long.

These things need to shed 300-500gr and not feel like you're grinding coffee for hours.

But for a trail bike......man.....I'm there

There was a thread discussing the perfect bike if money was no issue. The joy of being able to just ride without the worries of using the right lube, breaking a derailleur hanger, or shifting under load.

I’d go with a custom built Ti frame (English) that can accommodate a “gearbox” paired with a Gates timing belt system. I’d then have some plus-sized tyres for “my suspension”, and I’m done. Nothing fancy, just simple (but not minimalist).

I was riding with a mate on one of those zerode's. He had a crash and that was it.

Gearbox locked up.

Walk to the car.

Ride over

It was quite a big crash tho to be fair. And he does crash a lot. Like. A LOT!

Pinion and rohloff.

Nothing else works as well

Rohloff on a MTB makes for some pretty heavy consumption of rear rims and terrible weight balance. Perfect for touring though, rebuild interval is about 10 years.

Pinion FTW.

Sounds like your "friend" is the kind of guy that should be riding a Single Speed
