Okay, I know the older crests are a no no and we have loads of stories of folding over, easily dented, no riders under 70kgs or they'll fall apart...

 

BUT.

 

the newer Crest S1 rims now have eyelets, a wider rim, etc, which make it look a good option. Additionally, at 1800g ish a set they're not feathers. A couple of bikes that have them as OEM have weight limits of around 120kgs...

 

So, whats the consensus on these?

 

Bear in mind, I am heavy. 115ish kgs. Dual sus bike doing dirt roadie stuff with maybe a little bit of gentle trail riding, definitely don't get too rowdy... 32 spoke rims from and rear...

I ran a set of Crests for over 4 year before i had any issues (spoke holes started to crack)

I never even had them trued in that time.

I am a heavy guy so they really surprised me how long they lasted.

I did have them built properly to a set of Hopes and i believe that is why they lasted so long.

 

Get the wheel built by somebody who knows what they doing and i think they will last.

OEM build wheels dont last.

I had Crest Mk3s. I am 89kg. I tore up my rear rim within 6 months. Have replaced it with an Arch. Solid. No issues. Still have a Crest on the front.

I had the mk3 Crest crack within a couple of minutes. Have not tried the s1 current bike came with the older Crest and yes when pushed hard I can feel them flex but so far so good still true and no damage but I ride with it in mind which drops confidence.

If I had to get a "budget" set I would go for the Lyne pulse 30 had the first gen amp which is basically the same rim just 32 spoke instead of 28.

+1 for the Lyne rims. I’m 110kg and a very playful trail rider. I run the Amp rims and they live up to my expectations.

 

The Pulse will suit you just fine.

Thanks fellas, put them on the ads now and will go for something stronger.

 

Your wallet may not thank you now, but it will in 6 months.

I can vouch for WTB rims, I'm on the heavier side and my i23's haven’t given me any problems in the last 5 years.

 

Let's just hope I didn't just jinx myself.

 

 

 

Not unless you want lots of rebuilds.

I beg to differ, I have raced with a set of mk1 crests for about 2 years, then a friend of mine raced with them for a few months and still have that same wheelset that just came off my dads anthem. Still as straight as the day I bought them, even after all the abuse of xco cup races and trailseekers. Also had a set on my vipa xt.

I'm guessing if you are doing XCO cup races you don't weigh north of 110kg?

 

Crests are good rims - no one is saying they aren't, but they are not meant for heavy guys.

Crests have always been for the lighter riders, I dont think much has changed there.

Its also a bit strange to me that they were such a popular pic because they arent exactly the lightest rims around considering how soft they are.
