Boktiet82 Posted November 15, 2021 Share Hoping for some advice or other "hacks". I've noticed this weekend that the screw that holds the Shimano Deore shifter together has gone AWOL. After testing some screws/bolts at home I've found it's a 5mm and some Googling has proven that I am in search for a M5 bolt of 8mm in length. I've been to builders and every hardware shop around the West Rand and Zilch for a button head of that length. Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to get it sorted? I'm in Cape Town so don't know the Jo'burg places Vetplant
droo Posted November 15, 2021 Share Builders is not a bolt shop, it's a (not very good) homeware store. Go to a bolt shop, they will have what you need. mazambaan, Boktiet82, Vetplant and 1 other
Jabez Posted November 15, 2021 Share West Rand Bolt and Nut should have. They have a branch on Ontdekkers Rd close to Florida. Boktiet82
PeterF Posted November 15, 2021 Share The chances of finding an 8mm long bolt are slim. Some cutting may be required. Boktiet82

Alouette3 Posted November 15, 2021 Share Do you have a pic of the bolt? Got a couple bust up shifters here that might have what you after? Boktiet82

Alouette3 Posted November 16, 2021 Share I don't have one of those unfortunately, but you will definitely pick one up at a bolt and fastener supplier. In the Cape we have the likes of Bolt Fast, Top Fast, Bolt it. You may just need to grind down the thread length a little if you can't find 8mm

I have some leads and will chase them down.
Gerhard765 Posted November 16, 2021 Share Some suppliers have different names for screws. Standard for button head is ISO 7380. Seems that M5x8 is a standard size but not everyone might stock it. Try to get a stainless steel fastener if possible (either A2 or A4). Boktiet82 and Vetplant
BogusOne Posted November 16, 2021 Share These should do the trick so most bike shops should be able to help you out. Boktiet82 and Danger Dassie

RobertWhitehead Posted November 16, 2021 Share Ya, places like Builders and Chamberlains do not stock the bolts you're after. I go to a place in Silverton PTA for all my bolt needs. I will be able to assist if needed. I am in Midrand on Tuesdays & Thursdays Boktiet82
