M5 Button Head "bolt" for Deore Shifter

Hoping for some advice or other "hacks".

I've noticed this weekend that the screw that holds the Shimano Deore shifter together has gone AWOL. After testing some screws/bolts at home I've found it's a 5mm and some Googling has proven that I am in search for a M5 bolt of 8mm in length. I've been to builders and every hardware shop around the West Rand and Zilch for a button head of that length.

Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to get it sorted?

you want to go to a specialist fastener/engineering supply place. I'm in Cape Town so don't know the Jo'burg places

Do you have a pic of the bolt? Got a couple bust up shifters here that might have what you after?

Hi

So i've added a pic of the shifter and the bolt that seems to be required.

I don't have one of those unfortunately, but you will definitely pick one up at a bolt and fastener supplier. In the Cape we have the likes of Bolt Fast, Top Fast, Bolt it. You may  just need to grind down the thread length a little if you can't find 8mm

Thanks for checking anyway, appreciated. I have some leads and will chase them down.

Some suppliers have different names for screws.

Standard for button head is ISO 7380. Seems that M5x8 is a standard size but not everyone might stock it.

Try to get a stainless steel fastener if possible (either A2 or A4).

These should do the trick so most bike shops should be able to help you out. :)

Yup. Done this before on a shifter. Works perfectly.

Ya, places like Builders and Chamberlains do not stock the bolts you're after. I go to a place in Silverton PTA for all my bolt needs. I will be able to assist if needed. I am in Midrand on Tuesdays & Thursdays
