I don't get this thread.

Why are people so upset about me (and others) enjoying the competition that Strava offers?

I don't get the opportunity to do actual races, so Strava allows me a bit of fun competition to help motivate me on my solo rides.

I completely understand it's limitations and the many variables involved and I certainly don't lose sleep over my results.

But is it really such a crime to wish that at the very least the leader boards are free from cheaters? (whether it's ebikes or any other form of cheating)

And for those that do take Strava segment times seriously, why does that upset you enough to chastise them for it?

Maybe that's the real issue which needs to be explored.

Agreed, also don't get what's wrong with being a bit competitive, its good motivation, personally love seeing myself slowly climbing up the leader boards.

Its also very demotivating knowing that on my fav segment which runs parallel to a tar road is dominated by roadies that ride next to the trail and one dude that did 800m in 0 seconds...

Would be amazing if leader boards would be completely accurate, free of cheating etc, but that wont ever happen, you'll always find someone wanting to "be the fastest" even though its not a level playing field.

Something that most maybe did not know. Alan Hatherly (SA XCO) rider was the under 23 XCO world champ. He also is then current UCI world champ in XCO short track - won it last month. Best of all he was also the UCI XCO first e-bike world champ. Is he a cheater?

Look at his profile on “inthebunch.co.za” and see what he has to say (as an international world class mtb rider - not some local guy like me) about riding an e-bike and where it is going in the future. Make some good reading. Seriously. Maybe people (at least some that is not e-bike riders) will have a different view.

I do agree you get some serious ass holes on e-bikes as you get them on normal mtb’s and road bikes. They will always be there. Just ignore them.

I’m not hating on ebikes, just saying they should be separate.

Actually quite like them, my Grandfather started riding one when he was 75 years old, after trying and failing to ride again after having a knee replacement. They definitely get people onto the trails that otherwise wouldn’t be able to or willing to.

Personally would love one for enduro laps, would just be much more fun, without absolutely killing the legs on the climbs with nothing left for the fun bit.

Yup, assholes are everywhere, unfortunately part of the game…

If people will just realize that most of us are riding for the fun of it (most of the times) In our group we have a lot of mtb riders, gravel bike riders and e-bike riders. On training rides we all ride together, we even swop bikes between riders when someone is struggling that day. We either help him on the climbs or put him on an e-bike during the ride so everybody have fun. But unfortunately you get those people who don't want to put in the hard km's during the week and just pitch up with there e-bike on race day  and see how many people they can "race" by (especially on the climbs). You will never see them do the long distances because the battery won't last. I did the 99'er this year (100km) and still had 70% battery life at the finish because I paddled most of the time in "off" mode. My aim is to see how far I can ride with a full battery and to do that you have to put in the hard km's during the week. I did 3 rides this week in the evenings:- 92km in total with 1386m climbing and 23.7km/h avg. Had only used 34% battery (I'm 62yrs and not skinny - 98kg) I don't even bother switching on the bike on the flats and on climbs less than 3%. Keep doing that and you will get fitter everyday. (You can actually get fit riding on an e-bike. It just depends on how you ride. It works for me) I am on Strava but use it only to match my rides to see how I did over time and to compare my data with myself. I use the e-bike setting but don't worry about someone else's time or KOM's. I still have my normal mtb and road bike and do ride them on and off.

Strava this, e-bike that, KOM ... wha wha wha wha.

These ebike vs non ebike topics are lame, get over it already.

Go ride your bike, send it, have fun and forget about what everyone else is doing. If you upset cause you didnt get the little yellow badge on strava, you doing it wrong.

Did you go fast, yes, did you beat your last time, yes. Then honestly who cares. No one goes on to the strava segments and looks at the KOM and goes oh wow you so cool, must be the best ever. NO no one cares about your strava KOM and neither should you.

Nobody is forcing you to read & comment on this thread though? If you don't care about Strava, ebikes & KOMs good for you but respect that there are people that do and like to chat about it?

So because I have a contrasting opinion to you I can't join the conversation? Seems a bit harsh?

In my opinion EXACTLY what they should be used for🦾

It was a joke, get over it. So many uptight people here. If I was to ever ride an ebike, I would expect tons of reticule, which I will find amusing, because I am grown up and have a sense of humour, no need to feel offended or threatened.

That's a beaut, thanks for the laugh. 🤣
