Chris Willemse Cycles: buy online, get previously opened package

It's all about the price. If they charged full retail for a previously opened OEM bagged chain then yeah they're a bit dodgy and you can have a little hubmoan.

If you got a good discount for a chain taken off a bike or opened by a previous customer then all is fair.

As long as the chain is in unused and long enough (if removed from a bike) then win-win.

Is it not chain cut from a reel and put into used packaging?  I have had some like that from CWC; never advertised in packaging and just came in a cling wrapped package.

No offense dude, but I’ve seen customers open stuff up in stores then put it back on the shelf. Similarly in my case, a customer bought the Uno and had it fitted in store. Once fitted he decided to buy Duo. After they removed it from his bike someone shelved it again and I bought it by a salesman that had no clue that it was opened or fitted before.

Humans F up everything, but also, the Human body is the worst place to store emotions.. wait, it’s the second worst place.. bikehub is definitely the worst place to store or share emotions..

I understand your gripe, but it still comes down to human error. There isn’t robots fulfilling your order directly from the suppliers production line.

Talk to the store to resolve, all parties can learn from this.

Yep. Waiting for feedback from store. 👍

No discount applies in this case. 😑

Entirely plausible explanation. I'll await the store's response.

Just to clarify (again): what I find strange is that a packet (that semi-translucent difficult-to-tear plastic Shimano so often uses) has been cut open, then folded over and resealed with a store sticker.

Why? Do you keep the packaging and put it on display on the shelf? It's an evidently unused chain, not underwear.

This is a daft comment - if you resell an item then its value is a lot higher if you have the original packaging.

Would you be fine if you bought a R40k macbook without the packaging?

I bought a new car. It didn't come in any packaging. It cost me a lot more than a bicycle chain or a MacBook. And the absence of packaging didn't bother me at all. The same with every new bicycle I have ever bought.

BTW, Apple is crap anyway. You couldn't give me a MacBook for free.

Do you really believe a used chain will sell for more if it's in its original packaging?

Macbooks tend to keep their value much better than used wear and tear bicycle parts...

Ok ive posted this somewhere before, but for the purpose of this retail packaging debate ill repeat it here.

last year I bought 2 x GRX groupos from Merlin cycles in the UK. About two months apart because they were on special again when i built my wife a bike too. The first one came in the d shiny  retail shimano boxes. Big and cumbersome. Pretty yes, but also went in the bin in 5 seconds flat.
The exact same stuff ordered two months later came in smaller repackaged plain boxes. Alot more compact. Everything in there, all NIB…just in ‘plain cardboard’ boxes. It was about half the size of the retail box i got 2 months earlier.

By that exampke alone and going on volumetric shipping charges…the OEM box will be cheaper to ship. I didnt mind 1 second that they cut open the retail stuff and repackaged it. Retail packaging costs more to ship and more to have on shelves. Shelfspace = money.

@tinmugwas the quick link in its little sealed bag?

No, as two separate parts inside same resealed plastic packet as the chain itself.

@MORNE  I hear what you are saying. I'm not that fussed about the package – just found it a little strange. But not engaging me when I specifically queried about it (yet, it's been 3 days) strikes me as a little tardy. 🤷‍♂️

Whatever. Move on. 👍

I think Quicklinks on shimano chains are a recent thing or something you pay extra for.
i built a full slx 12 speed groupset onto a bike in november 2020 and that still had the weird shimano pin on it instead of quicklink.

oem chain imo means a chain received in a box with other things…meant for putting cookie cutter bikes together for resale in the shop.
Mr ABC comes into the store…sees the bike but doesnt want SLX, so asks them to upgrade the groupset.

That brand new unused SLX stuff gets removed from the bike and repackaged in plastic bags and whatnot and sold as OEM.

Is it ethical? Meh?
