Rear end of bike making clicking sound - I need help diagnosing what may be causing it

Is the hub also only 1 month old? I had the bearing in a freehub fail and it only made the noise when actually pedaling. I was convinced it was the seat post until I realized it made the same horrible noise when standing or seated while pedaling.

Yip it is only a month old. I am convinced it is the bearing. I am definitely considering buying some reslly high quality bearings that will last. It makes the noise when standing and the bearing feels gritty.

Hey hubbers, I was out riding yesterday and upon riding home, I discovered there was a clicking sound coming from the rear end.

I suspect it is hub-related because I have recently regreased the entire bottom bracket assembly and the noise is only present when I am pedalling.

Even if I pedal with literally no load, the clicking is still present, but only if I am sitting on the bike. On the stand, the noise is gone.

Another thing that has confused me is that it only makes the noise in the 3 easiest gears.

Incase it helps, it is a sram gx 10-50 cassette on a lyne amp high engagement wheel.

Normally I am pretty good with these things but this has stumped me. I am planning to tear the hub down on saturday but I am hoping it may be something simple that I overlooked.

Freehub. Open and clean out all the grease. Grease only the springs with a light grease.

Test again.

I am actually not sure, the cassette is pretty dead, so there may well be. But it isn't a sound from the chain skipping or anything, it is a click that you can feel through the bike.

Mine was just a sound, not a "feel".

Reading the rest of your posts I cant help but thinking back to a "sound" we had on Maritz's bike ....  Turned out the pedal bearings were shot.  Just about did a strip down and rebuild before tracing it back to the source.

These sounds can really chase one in circles ....

The standard bearings are rubbish. I need another replacement again. Lasted 8 months.

Did you remove the freehub at any stage ?

Could be a pawl flopping about.

 Could be a bearing

could be a slight misalignment of the derailleur

could be a pivot bearing

check the crank retaining bolt torque. SRAM bb30 cranks have a habit of working the bolt lose if you don’t apply a drop of loctite

On my Trek Fuel EX5 the bearing collapsed after a 1 000 km, of basic trails with no water or mud.

Trek actually wanted to sell me a new hub !!  On a bike which had only done 1 000 km.

Was hoping it was a once of issue .... but seems I am not only person having issues with their bearings.

Thanks Diesel, you are always a help on any mechanical thread.

I have not removed the freehub, so the pawls should be fine, but I will see when I open it.

The cranks are lyne and I recently regreased them and checked torque so they are all good.

I think it's the bearings but I will see later this week.

I think I may just spend the money and buy some nice bearings if they are what is causing it. I understand companies have to keep the cost down to sell things at a budget price and bearings are easy to replace.

I could also feel the click. Replaced bearings and it persisted. Ended with replacing the freehub itself. Same hub.
