HenningM Posted July 18, 2023 Share Hi, I am thinking about getting a mountain bike to explore the Helderberg region. I am completely new to this. My budget seems to be a bit tight though, about 8K max, so I am not sure if it's worth it to actually continue dreaming about this or if I should rather stick to my hiking boots... I have been browsing the second hand market, but I'm not too sure what to look out for, so I decided to ask for help and guidance on here. What should I look out for? Is there something decent out there considering my budget?

HenningM Posted July 19, 2023 Share Cool thanks, do you think this one might be a good one to start with? I am 1,84cm tall, so I wasn't 100% sure which size to choose. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/649840/29er-gt-hardtail-2019
Dusty Posted July 19, 2023 Share At that height you will fall into the large range 9/10 times. HenningM and Zebra 1
robbybzgo Posted July 19, 2023 Share That bike does appear to be very entry level. Your budget can afford a better bike. If you buy this bike you might be, very quickly, be looking to upgrade if you really get into MTB'ing... HenningM
HenningM Posted July 19, 2023 Share I knew it was a good idea to open this thread! When I see saw all these bikes 15K and more, I had a hunch it might be an expensive hobby. But I'll keep looking and post here if I think I found something decent for little money. Thanks again for the input guys.

robbybzgo Posted July 19, 2023 Share It does look reasonable but pedals would need to be purchased (flat or cleated as per your choice) and a chain guide would be advisable in the future. It's always nice to test ride a bike but might not be possible in your case... HenningM

robbybzgo Posted July 19, 2023 Share In the future the main ring will wear and with the chain in the smallest ring at the rear the chain can become slack enough and with rough terrain it can come off the main ring. Ask me, it happened twice in a race so I bought a chain guide and never had that problem again. A one by (1x) doesn't have the front derailleur to help keep the chain in check going onto the front chainring. Robbie Stewart

A Winelands South permit will get you access to the farms betwixt S-West and Stellenbosch that allows bikes. 30 minutes ago, robbybzgo said: In the future the main ring will wear and with the chain in the smallest ring at the rear the chain can become slack enough and with rough terrain it can come off the main ring. A Clutch derailleur and the correct length chain will mostly avoid that. Chain guide is just added insurance that will help in the extreme cases. But it's not a "must -have." But for Henning I will add into the box HenningM, Mark_J, Robbie Stewart and 6 others
