Help me choose versatile tyres for MTB (road + trail use)

Hi all,

I hope this finds you well, I ride a Trek Top Fuel and have been enjoying road cycling more lately, but I still want to keep the option of hitting trails now and then. My current tyres (Bontrager XR4s) are wearing out and make tar riding feel draggy.

I would prefer not to buy a second wheelset as I cant afford such at the moment, so I am looking for a good hybrid tyre that rolls well on tarred roads but still handles gravel/light trails around.

Any suggestions for front + rear combos that balance speed and grip?

Thanks in advance.

My Trek also came with XR4s. I ride tar to my local trails so wanted something faster rolling to get there, but still enjoy the trails. I swapped my rear XR4 for a Maxxis Ikon 2.35. I could instantly pedal in 1-2 gears faster for no extra effort. I still have all the grip I could need for the trails in Jonkershoek (if anything, the front XR4 has more grip than I need).

I can highly recommend swapping the rear XR4 out. If you like the results and realise you don’t miss the extra grip you can then swap out the front as well.

As a bit of an aside, does anyone have recommendations for a front tyre with more grip than a Maxxis Ikon and faster rolling than an XR4?

Yes, exactly what I had. I moved from the Ikons to Maxxis Rekon Race's, in  2.4.

They still roll really well, but give enough grip for marathons and moderate trail riding.

Do I understand correctly that in your experience the Maxxis Rekon Race’s in 2.4 have more grip than the Maxxis Ikon 2.35?

Pirelli scorpion XC Sport.

its single compound rubber delivers good balance between grip and rolling resistance for around R800 a tyre. I’ve used them as training tyres in the offseason and they deliver great performance when ridden on tar. The loss of performance is gradual but allows good use of the tyre unlike triple compound tyres which cost a lot more .

if you want to pay more the Pirelli scorpion XC RC prowall is an excellent race tyre

Schwalbe Hurricane Performance

Poorly suited to Western Cape trail conditions. Ideal for the road section of a ride but that’s about it.
